Badly-Tempered Clavier
Hi everyone, new here blush.gif

I am trying to find out about what is considered normal for cello string lengths. I have an option of two different cellos and for one of them the string length is 27 5/8 inches, unfortunately I can't find a good conversion to mm, and I *think* the length of back was 30 inches.

As far as I can tell this is on the large side, but if I were to later try and sell the cello, would these measurements be a hindrance?

More importantly, how much of an effect does it have moving from these measurements to something smaller?

Thanks for any help.

Best to find a cello that suits your own hand size rather than worry too much about resale value I think.

Good luck!

Thanks, the link was pretty helpful (as is their whole site). You are right that I should consider how the instrument suits me.

I am still wondering how difficult it is to switch between instruments. I started on full-size and only ever really played my own cello, so I've never tried before. I wonder if I play the larger one, will I be able to switch easily to the smaller one which I used to use, and will probably keep?

I am mainly just curious, it's not a main factor or anything. An thoughts, anyone?

Personally I would say it is surprisingly easy to switch between different sizes, though you will have a preference for a particular size. Though I have only very average technical ability I find I can pick up a larger or smaller cello than my own and manage fine without having to apply too much thought. Even picking up a child's 1/2 size cello does not take long to adapt too!
A string length of 27 5/8 and LOB of 30" is not particularly on the large side by the way, are you sure this is bigger than what you play already?

Sorry, I got the length of back wrong, it must have been larger than 30" as I googled it and got 'very large cello' in the results, but I don't have the measurement or the cello to hand. The string length is right, though.

I might post again when I have the right measurement, just to check it's not ridiculously big!
