My daughter and I have been enjoying some Mazas and Pleyel violin duets, along with the Bach double in D minor. We are both Grade 8 standard, but don't get together often so it's nice just to be able to pick up some pieces and play them without practising! We don't know a lot about repertoire and hope that there might be some other pieces of similar standard out there that we could play through when we get together? Any suggestions???

Visit a good sheet music shop and get browsing .....
Find your local charity shop that also sells second hand books and music and get browsing ....
Try second hand sheet music on ebay...

I've used all three and the best part is finding things you would never have thought of in the first place - have fun smile.gif !

I have some great Stamitz viola duets - don't know if they do a violin version.

I got them from Fuller Music - try HERE

Hope that helps biggrin.gif

There are some very old violin duet arrangements (dating back to Mozart's time - not sure whether he arranged them himself - maybe somebody else knows?) of arias from Don Giovanni and the Magic Flute. Some of them are not that easy, but Grade 8 standard means you should be able to give them a good go, and you probably know what they are supposed to sound like.

Also I can recommend the Telemann Canonic Sonatas. They are maybe grade 6 standard (ish), so you should find them very approachable, and they are really lovely.

Enjoy your duetting! smile.gif

Wieniawski's 8 Capriccios for 2 violins.
Really good fun and don't need a pianist.
Tie your hands up in knots in places though laugh.gif

My favourite is Vivaldi's concerto in D minor Opus 3. Nr 11 for which there is a version for two violins and piano although you don't have to play the piano part.

There's also a fun arrangement of the Queen of Sheba for two violins or violin and viola, again with piano.

We've had a lot of fun with Aleksey Igudesman's Catscratch Book, and also the Latin American duets (nb a couple of the latin ones are well on the fiendish side .... although a glass or two of wine, or maybe even mojito can go a long way to soften this ..... blink.gif)

Definitely! Even the easier ones near the beginning can be absolutely fascinating, if you really start looking into how he's assembled the two parts against one another.

This is great - I have lots to have a look at now! My credit card is taking a bashing, but I will certainly keep a lookout for good pieces in charity shops/ebay too. Thanks to everyone.
