I've been learning violin for about three months now, and today while I was tuning my violin the E string snapped. I was planning on replacing the rubbish ones that came with the violin anyway, so now is the moment.

My violin is fairly cheap and ###### and I'll be replacing it in a couple of months anyway, but I am planning on keeping it as its still special to me. And so I would like some good but not too expensive strings to see me through till I get my new violin.

So, what strings do you guys recommend I get?

I think Dominants would do the job just fine.

Yes, Dominants are robust and not outrageously expensive.

Since it's quite early on in your playing days, do you need to replace the instrument so soon? A decent set of strings could make it sound like a completely different instrument. You don't give the make, but I have had students go through Grades 4 and 5 on a basic Stentor. You might be better off waiting a while until you are a bit further on, and then you will probably have a better idea of what you want from an upgrade. Just a thought.

Thanks guys, between you and my teacher I've decided to order Dominants.
Misterioso - I bought a ?45 student outfit off of the web as I wasn't sure if I would be able to play due to personal health issues. As I can manage to play (according to my teacher I'm progressing faster than anyone she's known) and I have some inheritance money my teacher and I decided that I should upgrade sooner rather than later to something that will get me through the next few years or so. I have played around with a few at my local violin shop, and I can recognise the difference in sound between different violins. The one I like the sound of most will be the one that comes home with me. Also my teacher has offered tto come with me to help biggrin.gif

Well, that sounds like several good reasons. Enjoy the shopping trip! smile.gif

I did enjoy trying nw violins when i was upgrading. The bit I did not like was all the treking back and forth between shops as that took up so much of my precious weekends. dry.gif

Ah well as far as I am aware there is only one violin shop here in Glasgow, so if I don't have too much trekking around to do. I'm going to check out a few places down south when I go to visit my parents next month.
Though, have to say my violin sounds so much nicer with the Dominants, so it might get a bit longer before being replaced. blush.gif
