Hello,

I have been learning the flute and I have always wanted to learn the violin. I have found a teacher and booked my first lesson in May! This gives me a bit of time to get a violin.

I can't wait! I am planning to hire a violin although I may be able to borrow one from a friend.

I expect a violin sounds a bit screechy to start with but I am very determined! Do you think the flute music I already own will work with the violin?

Firstly: congratulations in deciding to learn the violin!
Of course, flute helps because you will be able to read music, but I am not sure that flute music will be suitable for beginner violin, as violinists start with learning the first position and your flute music may go higher that the B above the ledger line... Apart from that, I think you should be okay.
Regards to starting the violin: make sure it is tuned before you start playing, and remember to tighten the bow (you will see a screw at one end of the bow, turn it until the hairs on the how are taunt, but just so you can stick your pinky through the gap between the wood and the hair, and remember to rosin first! (the rosin is the amberish coloured block that you usually find in a cloth, a tin or a mini wooden 'crate'.
As I am only a beginner myself, you'll have to wait for one of the more expert forumites to answer, and enjoy your violin playing!

Good luck, and well done on pursuing your dreams....

As for music, yes, flute music will work with the violin as the violin has a bigger range. BUT for a long while it will be better to use music published for the violin as it will include bowings and fingerings to help. Only later will you be experienced enough to sort them out yourself.

That's rosin.....you got me confused for a moment there!

Congratulations and good luck. Flute music will be fine in due course - but as noted above, you'll need some violin music with the bowings marked and initially beginner's pieces will be focused around 1st positon and open strings.

I'm sure you'll receive lots of friendly advice from the string fraternity - I'm a cellist and viol player so a bit deficient on violin specific advice!

I'd think the most important difference between beginner flute and violin music would be in the keys - flute more likely to be in C major, violin in D, G or A, depending on which string(s) you are concentrating on, as violin is almost always started on the basic 0-1-23 finger pattern, which doesn't apply across all strings in any one key.

Good luck and have fun with your violin lessons and learning. It's a wonderful instrument! violin.gif
