Hi everyone.

Wondered if anyone could give me some advice on tuning pegs ?

Once my violin is tuned at the begining of a session, they slowly start to loosen sending it out of tune. unsure.gif

Can anyone suggest anything to help stop this happening or is it a common problem ?

Thanks,
Fiona

I could've sworn I already replied to this - they're new strings, right?

Hi Davidmusic,

Yeah, they are new strings but I haven't had any replies until today 29th Feb. (??) wink.gif

I hadn't played my violin for a while until the last couple of years ago.
It needed a new bridge and string etc (got knocked or something whilst moving house !) so I took it into Forsythes to be serviced.

It had 4 new strings and bridge.
The E string seems to be the worst for slipping. Probably due to that string being the thinist and and quite tight over the bridge but they all loose tune.

Is it to do with new strings?

Thanks, rolleyes.gif

Bingo.

I don't consider myself an expert on violin, but I teach theory on a violin learning course for 5-8 year olds, and so I've picked up a little from friends.

A couple of weeks ago, an expert violinist who was teahcing on the course was playing some very complicated music, incredibly fast, and constantly stopping to retune for half a second, then continuing.

I asked her what she was doing and she said she had a concert that evening, and was playing a concerto. SHe'd just had a new string put on and she said that it needed about 6 hours of hard playing to get it to settle down.

Basically, from what I know, it's exponential. She's an amazingly player, and it takes her 6 hours to get a string to settle down. For the average player, it'll take a few weeks to settle down completely.

Thanks for that David. rolleyes.gif

I thought I couldn't remember my violin going out of tune that quick years ago. That obviously explains it !

Thanks again ! smile.gif
