I've been playing on a Yanigasawa 991 alto for about 10 years and have been very happy with it. I wouldn't claim it is the best sax in the price range - just the one that was best for me.

Daughter has never played an Yanigasawa alto but she is currently playing 901 sop and bari which are both good saxes. We will definately buy a 901 bari at some stage.

The Yani is probably a bit expensive for me - if I was looking to get a better instrument, I'd either look at new Bauhaus Walstein, or go second hand.

Yani's are lovely instruments. I think when you get to the Yani/Yamaha/new Selmer decision it's really personal preference. They're all great instruments, so if it feels good for you then go for it!

Recently bought a yamaha 62 alto but did consider the yanig's before purchase. It came down to the fact that i'd always used yamahas and have a yamaha sop so thought i'd stick with it. It was a tough call though as both ranges are great at the "serious" end of the spectrum , comes down to personal choice in the end.

Yani's are very good.
However it would be worth going along to the shop and spending the day trying as much as you can, you may not like it, or it might not be quite right. I went into a music shoop with the idea of buying that saxophone and came out with one that was significantly cheaper but i liked better. Its all down to trying out the saxes and personal preference.

I'd definitely be going down the vintage route but thats because I like all type of old things
