Cyrilla
Just to let you all know that there is a one-day course at the Birmingham Conservatoire on Sunday 24th April.

It comprises an introduction to Kodaly, musicianship at three levels and a workshop on folksongs/singing games and their application to music education.

The tutors are David and Yuko Vinden, Miranda Zwalf and Susan Brumfield, who are all great! David and Yuko are total enthusiasts, wonderful musicians and excellent teachers. Miranda is a professional flautist who teaches Kodaly at the Guildhall with me and also at Birmingham Conservatoire. Susan is an American who is a tremendous Kodaly pedagogue and also an expert on singing games (she is currently on a sabbatical here doing more research and collecting).

The cost for Birmingham school teachers, BKA members, full-time students and concessions is £25, and for all others it's £35.

More details, info and an application form are available from either:

David Vinden, tel/fax 01923-821526 or Miranda Zwalf, tel/fax 01223-424574

Also I've just found out I'm running a Kodaly session on the CT Fast-Track course in Kenilworth on Monday, so if any of you guys are on the course, I'll see you there!! smile.gif

Please contact Cyrilla via private message if you'd like to contact David or Miranda via email

Many thanks

Please excuse my ignorance, and I'm sure it's probably be explained somewhere, but what is Kodaly?

Kodaly was a Hungarian musician and teacher, who developed some innovative teaching techniques to bring out the latent musical abilities in pupils through a mixture of activities, including song, signing and movement before playing an instrument

I don't know much more than this, and I may have got some of it wrong. But the technique sounds fascinating, which is why I'd like to find out more.

Cheers

Amber
It DOES sound fascinating, doesn't it. I'd be interested to learn more too.

Hi Amber,

If you do a keyword search for "Kodaly" set to "from the beginning" it brings up 5 pages of links to threads where Kodaly has been discussed on this website. The best overview is a lovely piece written by Cyrilla which I now can't find - I think it might have been Libretto November 2003, but I'm just guessing really.
Helen
There is one in articles.
zoda
can you get to articles from forums, or do you have to find your way back to the main website?
Helen
Main website, then 'students'
zoda
Found it! Thanks Helen! It's called the Kodaly experience, May 2003 - Main Website, then students, it's currently the bottom of the articles listed towards the bottom of the page.
Helen
Yes, thats the one! Personally I like the bit where Cyrilla said she used to stand by the piano hardly opening her mouth... that sounds so familiar!
Amber
Thanks, I'll go and hunt for it.

Sorry, folks, the reason this is on a Sunday is that the tutors all teach on Saturdays - and most other days of the week, too.

There just aren't enough days...

nicki_flute
There needs to be an extra day dedicated to music!
Rosemary
Is anyone else going to the Kodaly day in Birmingham on 24th April?

It should be excellent. Am looking forward to it.

Rosemary.

Hi Natalie

If you are going by train it's only a 10 minute walk from the station to the Conservatoire. It's right in the centre of Birmingham, very easy to find.

Rosemary.

I think we're beginners Nat.
This is going to be so cool!
saxlover
its not think its we are beginners!

isnt it excting!

ooh train stations- my heads confuzzled! which one did you say to go to Helen, new street?!

Ok ok. WE ARE beginners. Better?

New Street is the nearest to the conservatoire, yes. But, it depends which is easier to go into from Chester (especially if you arent keen on changing trains.). In Birmingham, there is also, Snow Hill station, and Moor Street station.
saxlover
well i suppose i dont mind changing trains, i have to do it in a few weeks when i go to sheffield uni to stay with my cousin, so if i end up in london on that weekend then ill find a non train changing train

does that make any sense whatsoever!?LOL

Why would you end up in London whilst going to Sheffield? blink.gif

Oops. We're off topic again.

Right. Kodaly. (did you know you dont actually pronounce it how its spelt? Cyrilla sent me a mini pronunciation guide, its actually 'cod-eye'!?!)
saxlover
becasue when i change trains if i get on the wrong one!! that would be typical me!

i pronounce it how its spelt but i know that its wrong! i think hows it supposed to be said is quite funny hehe!

I knew that.

What other Kodaly courses are planned Cyrilla.
zoda
Maybe they should call the course "An Introduction to Cod - eye" and then whack people in the eye with a fish as they come through the door (like that fishmonger's wife in the Asterix comics). Not a bad way to make £35 a shot blink.gif
Andy-piano-flute
Are you going to do a course in Northern Ireland cos I would definitely be there. Probably plus 3 or 4 offspring.
saxlover
is anyone else going? i want to meet people!!!!

Shades of Monty Python.... laugh.gif
Cyrilla
Helen and Nat - you are NOT 'pre-beginners'!!!

Yes, solfege is 'all that do re mi stuff'...

The reference to Kodaly and instrumental teaching is because most of the people on the course will be teachers of one sort or another and some of them will be instrumental teachers - therefore those are the people who would be interested in relating K training to instrumental teaching.

neil.clarinet - if you look on the BKA website it should tell you of upcoming courses. Which part of the country are you in? The Summer School is the best one to go on - expensive but great!

Re courses in Northern Ireland - there aren't any that I know of, but I do know there is an Irish Kodaly Summer School - in the Republic though - sorry, I don't know any more details..

well, was thinking of sorting out to get there..
Seems that it is not an option... earliest train from Manchester appears to arrive in Birmingham after 11.
Might ring train station in case this is one of those journeys which trainline chooses not to give you all the information about.
saxlover
well the only poss trian i can get form chester leaves at 11pm sat night! hmm i dont think i want to get there as early as 3am!! and i have to change twice!

Which company have you tried? I find Chiltern the best. Much cheaper and the seats are more comfortable than on the Virgin trains!
saxlover
i just typed 'trains to birmingham new street' into google!!! i mgiht try a proper company website!
