| neil.clarinet - if you look on the BKA website it should tell you of upcoming courses. Which part of the country are you in? The Summer School is the best one to go on - expensive but great! |
Done that
I am a bit dissapointed there are none in Scotland. Maybe the BKA could think about expanding their work to places like Scotland and Northern Ireland to make them more accessible to people like myself. I would definitely come, but I live too far away (it is also two weeks before my finals; stress!!!) I can already sight-sing to sol-fa, and do the hand signs (Australian Kodaly site), but their application to teaching is intriguing.
Will definitely think about the summer school though.

Neil - there are some in Scotland from time to time.
Lucinda Geoghegan, who is heavily involved with the National Youth Choir of Scotland (who all learn Kodaly from the youngest levels) certainly runs some courses. She is also developing a musicianship programme (with teachers' and children's books), teaching using the Kodaly principles. If you like I could give you her e-mail address (please PM me). She is one of the absolute top Kodaly teachers but of course is run off her feet with all she does. I believe she is also involved with setting up a similar course to the Guildhall's String Training Programme at the Junior Royal Scottish Academy.
The problem with running courses anywhere is that it has to be somewhere where we have people sufficiently highly trained and experienced to be able to teach them! I'm afraid at the moment I don't think we have anyone in Northern Ireland but I may be wrong - I will try to look into this for you.
I've been training some teachers on the Isle of Man and the Head of the Music Service there has been on the Summer School and is expanding his work into many of the island's primary schools.
Personally I am more than happy to go anywhere to run a course, but only if we can guarantee enough students to make it financially viable.
I'm glad you've learned the handsigns and can sing in solfa!!

I think the Summer School is just the best thing to do initially. You just can't learn to teach in the Kodaly way from a book!
If you are ever down London way you are more than welcome to come and watch some classes, either at Guildhall or in schools. Just get in touch.
Maybe meet you in Leicester this summer?? If you would like a brochure just PM me and I will send you one.
All the best.

I am not an especially keen singer, but it isn't about singing, it is about developing your aural skills. And, why not have ago at singing, and have a laugh

I am a hopeless singer but I would have gone, apart from personal circumstances interveened.

Sorry, guys, just had a little over-sensitive moment there...
It just makes me very sad when musicians see singing as divorced from playing an instrument, when it is actually the most natural musical instrument of them all and the one which all musicians should feel comfortable using.
Sadly we don't have a 'singing society' and generally people are taught (whether implicitly or with the 'you can't sing' type of comments) that singing is difficult/silly/sissy/unnecessary/not pleasurable..and it doesn't HAVE to be this way.
Sorry, just feeling sad and frustrated with the enormity of the task - if this is how musicians and music students feel about singing, then what hope is there??
Sorry AGAIN - clearly just having a bad day here...

I'd have to hum - I can't whistle. I wonder what they'd do if you couldn't sing or hum because of a cold, but weren't able to whistle. I guess you would HAVE to play them back?

That does not make an extra train appear on the timetable unfortunately..
Plenty of trains from Manchester on other days but Sunday the first one gets to Birmingham around 10 past 11 (if it is on time).
I really am uncomfortable about taking part in Sunday events but was considering it if it was practical to get there.
Just have to wait for something similar in Manchester.

I don't think it would be that hard with the simple tunes you have to sing back in the aurals. If you were being forced to use your instrument because your voice was not working, would they give you the key note (ie tell you what it was) I wonder? Although even if you played it correctly but transposed then I expect you would get credit for that even if you didn't start on the right note.
Sbhoa: yeah I'm waiting for either things to come closer or to have transport! though Sundays aren't great for me either.
