Despite the political voting in places, it's the former.

I think there is more to it than political voting. Europe's taste in music seems a lot different to ours. If America was part of the competition, I think UK and Ireland would score more highly, as American pop music is more in line with ours. And let's face it, America isn't much less European than some of the countries that take part.

Yep! We need to stop taking this competition seriously, play the Europeans at their own game, and enter some naff song next time.

As for Englebert, I was sceptical when I heard he was representing UK, but I liked his song. I don't have a TV and was out for most of the evening anyway. But I turned on the radio just in time to hear the reminder of all the songs. Without being biased, Englebert's was the only song that stood out from the others in any way. Just a pity he was on first.
