LearnerFlute
Hello,

I have had my third lesson now and am very pleased. I have to start doing incy wincy spider with the bow and we are working through the Abracadabra book. I can play twinkle twinkle little star, Old Macdonald and other simple tunes from the book.

I played my violin for a friend and she said that was good. I then played her the flute (I am grade 4). She said although the piece I played was more advanced on the flute, the violin was more impressive. (Not sure what that says about my flute playing...

This week I have to learn to play and read and play the notes G, A, B and C using the G string.

There is so much stuff on the internet about how adults can't learn violin and about how hard it is that I nearly didn't try. I am glad I did though. It gives an enourmous sense of achievement when you play a tune and it sounds like it is supposed to!

P.S. - I love my flute too.

Good for you!
I love my violin too, and I didn't touch one till I was 39.

Hi Learnerflute - sounds like you're doing really well.

You're right there are lots of people out there (not here) who are very negative about adult learners, especially the violin for some reason unsure.gif so well done you for not letting them talk you out of it.

I guess being able to read music already is a big help for you, so you can really focus on the playing. I came to the violin without a first instrument so I'm still learning out the "dots" (rhythm is my bugbear) but three years on and I'm really loving it. It's been a struggle at times, but I'm so glad I kept going.

I love my violin so much I would feel incomplete without her.

I can't read rhythms either. Specially if there are tied notes or dotted crotchets. Not having to worry about that on violin just yet. I am just chuffed I can play something. Some people have been quite unsupportive of me taking up a second instrument when I can't even play the first very well. I think going right back to basics from a reading music point of view is good for me smile.gif

Well done on your great progress smile.gif

I also was a flautist, i got to diploma level and then wanted a violin when i was about 14 but my parents said no way. Forgot about the idea entirely until my 16th birthday, when i just decided to buy one. My dad was NOT happy, claiming it would sound horrific and was a waste of money.
3 years later i was in music college XD

Never say never, and never say it's too late/toohard/too old biggrin.gif I nearly did, but now my entire life is violin
