I am qualified as an Early Years teacher but not a kindergarten music teacher. I will be doing 10 weeks teaching practice (of one 40 minute session a week) and will be buying instruments, etc? Is it cheeky to charge half price for the 10 weeks (and then full price thereafter) or should I offer it free?

Why not charge the full price? They can afford it, right?
You could use the income to buy materials for future use to make the classes even more fun!

The reason I did not want to charge the full price is although I am a qualified Early Years teacher, I will not be a qualified music kindergarten teacher until I have submitted all the assignments and actually completed the teaching practice.

Honestly, it's not in your interests to draw attention to that. And since you are training now you could argue that your knowledge and enthusiasm are giving a better educational experience to the children than someone who qualified decades ago and has lost their sparkle.
You are investing in developing your teaching skills so that you can give a better musical education to the children, that's wonderful! Don't undersell what you are offering

It sounds like you're undervaluing your existing skills.
I bet you're fabulous. Charge the full amount and good luck

Thanks very much, violincjj and ExpressYourself for your thoughts, which have helped me to decide to go for it.

Wow! When I did my teaching practice it never occurred to me to charge the school for the privilege.

Neither did I when I was going in to observe and learn how to be an early years teacher, but in this instance I suppose I am really offering a service that they do not already have (and learning my craft elsewhere) rather than observing and learning from the teachers already there in that respect.

BadStrad, I don't think this is 'teaching practice' in perhaps the way that you perceive it.
PianoNotes, I would definitely charge the full amount or very near it. You are a conscientious person with a lot of experience with children and who is dedicated to giving the very best of yourself.

Thanks for that, Cyrilla.

Ahh! I see. Now where's that thread about not reading the thread titles properly. . .

No worries, BadStrad.

Off topic : but I do wish Colourstrings would appreciate that there is more to woodwind instruments than flutes, otherwise I'd seriously consider training up

I must say I am enjoying the kindergarten course very much, barry-clari. I suppose they may get around to writing a book for teaching the clarinet. The last price list I saw said that there was a Trumpet ABC book in preparation in Finland, not that that is any good to you.
I may even consider Springboard in the distant future. I have enough to concentrate on at the moment with the piano and the recorder, and would like to get some work experience (plus be way, way ahead with my musicianship) before embarking upon any more courses.

A trumpet book is good news, it means that Colourstrings have discovered transposing instruments...

If you have a Colourstrings email address, PianoNotes, could you PM it to me? Thanks

I have sent an email to the Colourstrings gang : I'll probably train up if a clarinet book/method is in the pipeline. Otherwise, no : and it's a great, great pity
