Full Version: Unaccompanied clarinet audition ammunition

First of all, apologies for not posting for a while... hopefully you guys can help me with this one. smile.gif

Secondly, looking ahead to another desperate attempt to claim a spot in a uni orchestra, I need some unaccompanied repertoire than will go down well in an audition. One of the auditions is accompanied and I've got that covered(ish) with the outer movements of Weber 2 or the F minor Brahms, but for one of the orchestras, I need to be unnacompanied. I could prepare the Stravinsky pieces again, but I would like something new and a bit more accessable.

It would be nice to play something I like as well, hopefully that would come across in an audition. I'm dying to get a place and play in an orchestra again... I miss it so much. sad.gif

Bela Kovacs: Hommage a Manuel de Falla always goes down a treat. There are some good videos on youtube. Kovacs was (is...?) a clarinettist so it sounds flashy but fits under the fingers really nicely!

One of the Bach Cello/Violin pieces that have been transcribed for Clarinet?

Two of them are on the Grade 8 Sylabus and are suitably impressive!! biggrin.gif

Any of the Kovacs Hommages are worth considering. I've performed a couple of them and they've gone down well.

I think it's also worth looking at the comparatively recent 'Three Etudes on themes of Gershwin' by Paul Harvey smile.gif

A bit of a wildcard idea: if you can show off your technique in the first piece, maybe play an orchestral solo for the second one? Rach 2 slow movement, perhaps?

We get orchestral stuff to be played by the orchestra chucked at us to sight read after, not sure how that would sit. Personally I'd give an arm and a leg to get to play that particular excerpt ( notworthy.gif rach 2)

They ain't gonna give you that as a sightreading test! They're going to pick something obscure for a reason.

My thinking was that (a) if you're at a university which has a great music department, there'll be people playing all sorts of virtuoso stuff with which you can't compete so you might as well show them what you could do in the orchestra, (b) if not, then maybe playing an unrequested extract beautifully might swing it your way, and © the panel might well include people who appreciate an unconventional approach!
