I'm fed up of the tantrum-throwing posts. Let's talk music.

Just had a fantastic rehearsal for the St Matthew Passion - I can't stop humming the final movement. Has anyone else sung it?

Cheers

Nope, but I went to an amazing concert last night with the Academy of Ancient Music. Wonderful baroque doubles. Anyone else heard them while they were 'on tour'?

I was listening to an Elizabeth Lutyen's String Quartet last night.

It's wonderful isn't it ?
I know the last movement quite well, although I haven't sung the complete work.

I've taken part in the St John Passion several times though.

Doing the St John next year.....

The Passion is being performed by a combination of 13 choirs and independent singers, conducted by Brian Kay, who is an absolutely inspirational conductor. It's a tremendous experience!

Cheers

Wow, sounds fabulous!

Waiting for the day I can make a decent go of "Erbarme dich"....argh!

Me and my brother (unclassifiable as he is known on the forums) are participating in a performance of the St. John Passion on Good Friday. I am leading the orchestra and he is playing the cello solo in "All Is Fulfilled" which he's thrilled about! Sadly neither of us will be singing... but never mind, maybe we will one day!

Is this by any chance in the Leith Hill Music Festival?
katyjay
Yes.

BIG PLUG FOR KATYJAY

The St Matthew Passion in this year's LHMF is on Sunday 6th March at 7.00 at Dorking Halls.

Not being many miles down the A25 from Dorking, some of my friends are singing in this. I'm considering going to the concert to cheer them (and Katyjay, of course!).

If anyone is planning on going, why don't we all meet up? Picture the scene, 28 forumtubbies wearing red roses and clutching copies of The Times in the Dorking Halls bar.

Dorking? Do you still need a passport to get into the place?

I see that no one is going to answer that question. laugh.gif

Now listening to some Blanche Marchesi. Anyone want to talk about her?

No takers... Never mind. She might not be the strongest she is so articulate.
Another reason to listen to singing forever.

I'd love to - unfortunately I'm already singing somewhere else - I think. Will check.

I bet nobody would look like how you'd envisiged them to be!
sarah-flute
yes! it's always interesting meeting people you know from the net, or even just seeing a pic or talking on the 'phone - I don't think anyone has ever fitted entirely with how I have imagined them, and sometimes I've been so far out it's been crazy!

it's a shame you can't have a picture as an avatar on here. I'm sure some people wouldn't anyway, but some people would and it's nice to have an idea of what people look like!

I updated messenger, I can now see everyone's webcams!... well when I get a chance to chat, anyway!
nicki_flute
No, I have never been close with how I see people I have never met before in my mind!

Did anyone go to katyjay's concerrt yesterday evening? I would have gone, but couldn't find any carnations, so no-one would have recognised me.

katyjay - hope it all went well. Isn't William Berger good!
katyjay
Hi Deborah

It was fantastic. Brian Kay was inspired as always. Six brilliant soloists - including Andrew Kennedy - a young tenor who will be representing England at Cardiff Singer of the World this year, William Berger being brilliant as usual, Huw Rhys-Evans as the Evangelist , Bibi Heal (Soprano) and Diana Moore (stunning mezzo). Richard Burkhard, who was to have sung Christus, had lost his voice so we had a last minute replacement....Peter Harvey! And Canzona (the baroque orchestra) were excellent too. And a hundred and thirty singers - a fabulous event! Everyone had a terrific time!

It's just a shame I can't persuade my main choir to compete - so I have to go to the festival as an Independent.

Next stops are my own choir's Spring concert in April (with Katyjay as soprano soloist biggrin.gif ) , Surrey Festival Choir (Brahms Deutsches Requiem smile.gif ) and looking forward to next year's LHMF which will be the St John Passion (which I've never sung before!)

And, of course, any Forum concerts that may crop up from time to time!

Cheers

Katyjay

ps - William Berger sat next to me at supper. And even spoke to me! He said "Please pass the butter."

Surrey Festival Choir (Brahms Deutsches Requiem smile.gif)

Go Katyjay! I am the secretary of the choir which is organising this event! I look forward to meeting you there (you probably met some of my partners in crime on Sunday). I attempted the soprano solo in the fifth movement during one rehearsal - boy it's tricky! Like the chorus part is actually easy...

I'll give it its own thread soon, but for anyone who would like to sing the Brahms Requiem on Saturday 9th April, visit here for details.

William Berger has sung solo with us before, and came on tour with us to Paris a few years ago. I had to give him an extra cheer when I heard him as Leporello at ENO last year.
katyjay
Deborah

Did you sing in the Messiah with Leith Hill last year? Would I have met you then? I'm the soprano who sang the angel recitatives during the rehearsals.

Cheers

Katyjay
kenm
It's threads like this one that need their titles changed.
Deborah
No, I've never done a Leith Hill concert, although I will do a Passion one of these days... I'm sure you were a real angel.

I managed to upset most of my friends there one year! Most of them were singing with Dorking Choral Society at the time, but having been born in Epsom, I felt obliged to cheer Epsom Choral Society in the competition. Epsom won that year biggrin.gif

Yes kenm, this thread probably could do with a title change, but - shock horror - it contains traces of musical discussion ohmy.gif
katyjay
Deborah

Just re-read your post about the Deutsches Requiem. I think we're discussing two different performances - I'm talking about the Surrey Festival Choir one in Guildford Cathedral in July, you are referring to the Reigate and Redhill performance in April?

Anyway, just wanted to ask is the R&R one a come-and-sing performance, or is it a come-and-listen one? wink.gif . Potentially interested either way.

Cheers

Katyjay
Deborah
All this Brahms Requiem is making my brain work fugually! The RRCS is a come-and-sing, so if you're able to make it, come along! Otherwise, you're welcome to come and listen.
