Full Version: G.4 Beethoven Minuet in G

I have someone doing the old syllabus grade 4 - Beethoven Minuet in G. In the ABRSM book bar 25 sounds wrong as if it either needs an A# (RH) or needs to lose the C# (LH) - and bar 27 sounds OK but I need to check that it's right. I don't have another edition of this piece to check against, although every on-line recording seems to take a different option - every combination of accidentals can be heard!

Maybe someone has an Urtext edition? Any suggestions appreciated!

I agree - there is something that sounds odd here. I don't have a copy in front of me - but I was quite glad when my student swapped to the Bach in the same group!

Sorry - not much help - no answer. But it definitely doesn't sound right.

I seem to remember they were both sharps when I played it as a kid, but youtube versions vary about 50/50 between A natural and A#. The string version, however, is definitely A#. There may be more than one original m/s, I would play it safe and do the wrong-sounding Associated Board version in the exam. Anybody heard the official CD version?

Thanks folks - this is one of my Room 101 pieces - arghhhhhhhhhhh! I'll ring the ABRSM about it - they are still working on last week's enquiry about errors in another piece (my pupils are like sniffer dogs - they automatically choose all the problem pieces!) I'm probably training a fine selection of music editors/ customs and excise officers!

There are tons of 'correct' versions on the web - have a look at those and compare - or, indeed, get your pupils to look at the copies on the web - it'll be a good exercise !

Have just rung Sarah at the ABRSM - they have had alot of enquiries about this piece and she has done research into it. She said it was fine to play the last quaver A of bar 25 as an A# from another edition as various OK versions exist of this piece. I said that I didn't have another edition, just the exam book, but could I just alter it anyway and she said that was fine. Bar 27 is as written. Voila! smile.gif
