Hi.
I started playing piano in September 2003. I'm ready to take my Grade 1 now. I was wondering how long it took anyone else before they were ready to take their first exam.

It took me about 2 years before i did grade 1 because when i startd i cudnt read music or anything and i didnt know the first thing about music and because i was about 10 then i didnt rush into an exam. Im only just doing my grade 4 now 6 years later because i dont exactly love exams and prefer to play the piano for enjoyment.

I started learning the piano from scratch in June 2001 and took Grade 1 the following June a year later - June 2002. I then took Grade 2 Piano in November 2002 and Grade 3 in March 2003. I then had a break for a term and took Grade 4 in November 2003. I'm now working on the Grade 5 repetoire and I'm planning to take the exam in November this year, along with the Grade 5 theory exam as well.
If you progress at the rate your going, I'm sure you'll have no problem in doing the same sort of thing that I've done.
Good Luck!

I took everything relatively nice and slow since I wasn't in for the exams, so it took me 10 years to complete grade 5, taking practical one year and theory the next. I can't remember how long it took before I took my first exam. 2 years is an okay time from Beginner to Grade 1 exam. The time is usually longer between then, and once one gets the hang of it, one moves faster, IMHO.

I also started playing the piano in september and im doing my grade 1 this month. I play several other instruments so i have a good background of music. If you're a complete beginner then obviously there would be a longer period of time between beginning and taking an exam.

Hey,
I started in May 2003 and I am now working for Grade 4 cause I could already read music and has background form other instruments. It's really reassuring to hear that other people are progressing at the same rate as me...takes the pressure off!

Clarinet I took my Grade 4 2 months after starting (I'm a saxophonist before anyone says wow, it wasn't that much of a struggle!)
I'm considering maybe taking a Piano exam.. unfortunately my technique is shocking.. I can sightread all the Grade 1-3 pieces (and have done so) but I don't actually think I could play them any better if I practice!

On my saxophone, I did grade 4 after 3 months, but similarly to Davidmusic, I play the clarinet, so i found it quite easy! Piano wisre though, I played for 5 years, then took grades 1-4 in just over a year!

I did 5 years of piano before taking an exam, but when I did actually take grade 3 I found it really easy!!
On my saxophone I did grade 4 in 3 months BUT I am a clarinettest, so it was not really that much of an achievement!
