i put my
old sax on my stand the other week and went to have my tea, when i came back it was on the floor

lol
luckily it wasnt damaged! it took me ages to find my ligature that had flown off!
oops!
my distant uncle relative person who plays sax, got a really expensive new one last year and he dropped it down the stairs!!! he was not happy! its costing about £400 to repair, but it might never be the same............................. hehe

We got our then 11yr old daughter a good violin just before Xmas 2003 & on New Year's Eve it slipped through her fingers as she was picking it up & "contacted the floor"! It split round the seam & had a soundpost crack & wasn't worth repairing. Oh & it wasn't covered by insurance & I think I felt like crying! All the instruments are insured now needless to say.

Whats worse than dropping your instrument is dropping it and not caring that you have dropped it. There's a violinist who I know that constantly drops either her violin or her bow, and she never cares!

That's true - I know she was really upset about the violin. Talking about dropping instruments I had a nightmare about dropping my new flute. In my dream the foot joint was completely bent & then I woke up in a real panic about it. Does that mean I'm going to drop my flute in the exam??

I hate to admit it, but i've dropped my instruments several times too! The worst thing though are the alto sax stands - my sax always seems so procariously (sp?) balanced on it.
I've had 2 really awful experiences when I was younger with my old B12 clarinet. The first was when I got the bell stuck on the lower joint, I pulled it apart with great force and it snapped! The other time my clarinet was happily standing on it's stand and the bookcase it was in front of completely collapsed and fell on it - Oops!!

i would probably cry if i dropped any of my instruments, and flinch about it for a month or three. Although I drop my mobile all the time and it doesnt really bother me. Theres just a kind of respect that musical instruments demand i suppose.

When I first got my £1000+ flute, I was terrified of taking it anywhere in case I dropped it and it broke. I am a little better now with it, but am still really careful with it.

I dropped my old flute once, but it was fine after a thorough check from our band conductor. My teacher once held his flute from the headjoint, and the body joint and the foot joint just slipped off and crashed to the floor, because he had greased it too much!

i dented my trumpet - i didnt drop it - i knocked it against the piano i was using as a music stand during a page turn - it wasnt that bad so i didnt have it removed, im still scared of dropping the trumpet or even worse someone stealing it, its really expensive as all good instrauments are these days , im really worried about the insurance though as it is with the house - whether this covers it everywhere i dont know?!
i dont worry to much about my two cornets as they were in a bad condition when the bands gave them to me, so even though i try not to dent them it isnt as worrying as my trumpet

Ach, dont talk to me about droping instruments! I was forever dropping my old flute! Well not so much droping it as banging it off music stands and it goes without saying that it had a fair few bashes in it!!!!!!!!!!

Allianz cornhill do a very comprehensive reasonably priced musical instrument insurance. It covers things like theft from cars & accidental damage & there's no excess. It covers things like cups of coffee going over pianos! I think it's much better than the house insurance sort of cover.

We had a digital piano thing at my old secondary school and for the concert rehersals the caretaker carried it down from the music room, and instead of taking it down the steps by reception he took it through the hall and dropped it off the end of the stage...

Once I put a cello in front of a book shelf in my music room, sideways on its ribs as you're supposed to put it. My mother was about to open the bookshelf, so she had to step over my cello (because the music room is really small for 1 table, a large 4 m long book shelf, 2 cellos, an upright piano and a Yamaha keyboard). Unfortunately she accidentaly kicked it and it turn over on its front side. The bridge broke, but I was able to glue it again. It wasn't my own cello, I borrowed it. I haven't returned it until now!

I have never (touch wood*) dropped any of my current instruments. I did once drop my first ever flute, fortunately the nickel ones are sturdy beasts and all it got was a minor scratch on the crown - pretty impressive from being dropped onto the stone floor of a church! However one of my friends did manage to tip my flute over when it was not as well balanced as I thought on its flute stand, and to this day it was a small dent

which I believe can be fixed, but I have not got transport at the moment to take it to the repairman.

My old flute was full of dents, it never effected to sound quality at all

, I have to confess though, most of them were my fault. My newer flute only has one dent, and I really have no idea where it came from, I try to be more careful with it!

according to one of my teachers, any dents will affect tone quality, just that small ones won't affect it very much. but I'm no flute technician. also depends where the dent(s) is(are)

Erm... all over the place.
As for that infamous cello incident. Um, well, I was in the middle of a Christmas concert at the school, and all the instrumentalist were crammed into one tiny corner. I was in front of a celloist friend of mine, and her teacher, who is semi-professional and came along with hos rather expensive cello to help us out.
During the interval, I wandered off, and ran into a few friends of mine, hwo were involved in the drama. We got chatting, I forgot the time...
Anyway, when someone pointed out to me, that shouldn't I be back with what I will losely call the orchestra, I sprinted back to the main hall and literally threw myself into my seat. It shot back about a meter, and behind this said cello was lying on the floor. Fortnetly its owner wasn't back yet (no I had no need to run after all

).
I think I missed it by about 2"!

I've dropped my clarinet lots. I did it the other day when I was holding it in between my legs trying to sort out music. I spent ages seeing if it was ok, which it was!
My friend dropped her tuba in the bath when she was washing it to get rid of some mould in the bottom! It had a huge dent in the bell! The head of music was not impressed, as it's not hers!
