Hello ! I'm a University student. I started learning the violin a year ago. A few weeks ago, my teacher told me that I shall take the violin exam this year (the winter session). She said that I can try grade 5. However, I haven't taken any violin exam before and really don't know about the standard required. What standard of performance is needed in grade 5 ?? I'm afraid that I coudn't get along well with the grade as I lack experience in playing this instrument. Thx~

May I know if you have taken any grades for other instruments? My situation is a bit similar to yours!

Yes. I've got the grade 8 piano.
And now, I have one hour private violin lesson every week.

Hi Musicforever
I think you might do well to look into the aural exam part as I think these are more daunting than the exam pieces, as well as all the required scales and arpeggios, diminished 7s etc.

Well, taking lessons every week really does help!!!
I thought the aural syllabus is the same applied to every instrument?
I just browse through the syllabus for grade 8 but found that it is the same as what i did for piano grade 8 few years ago???
But i think scales and pieces are the tough ones. I myself is trying out grade8 scales, and plan to do my grade 8 maybe after i finish my university studies in 3 years' time. But i didn't hv lessons since i can't affort it on top of the university's fees and living expenses.
