At the moment I am not actually having violin lessons, just playing what I want when I want really. I am currently playing "Goodnight Sweetheart" which is an old wartime song, sung by, (I think) Dame Vera lynn.
I am finding is slightly awkward, and someone suggsted playing in 'half position'. What is this?

If you were playing on the D string, half position would be pulling your first finger back for a D sharp, then putting your second finger on E, third finger on F and 4th finger on G. It's often used, especially in viola music, to avoid awkward string crossings.

Hope this helps!
