Hello, I'm studying for grade 8 piano, and have a piece by Debussy , a prelude called Minstrels. Just looking at it makes me nervous, and I wonder if anyone can recommed a good recording, which will give me some idea of where to start?
Thanks for the ideas about Bach, everyone is very helpful and ecouraging

I'm not a teacher by the way but I just wanted to alert you to the discussions
here and
here that have been happening in the not too distant past regrading relying on a recording to get to know the piece. Many people say that it is unwise to do this and that one should become familiar with the music oneself before listening to a recording (on the other hand some people think recordings are a good idea...). Just a thought. If you truly find the music really daunting maybe you could try looking at some other, perhaps easier, Debussy repertoire before you approach the grade 8 exam.
(P.S. some teachers have complained in the past about students asking questions in this forum (and posting, irnoically I'm doing that now though...) perhaps viva piano might be a better place for future questions: not that it bothers me, it's just what some people have said...).

It is so much a matter of personal taste!
Ask the library for Maurizio Pollini's or Michaelangeli's renderings. Both are great pianists. I prefer either to Samson Francois whose recording is listless.
Yes, try not to listen too hard to recordings.

thank you both very much. I realise that this is a teachers forum. As well as having lessons myself, after a break of 35 years, I also have 3 pupils. My teacher supervises me in my teaching, and generously acts as a resource when I have questions. She also advises on books and repertoire. I have decided to sit the exams, and hope to do a diploma .
I only teach pupils to grade 4 , practical and grade 5 theory.
When I listened to the Liszt , Consolation no 3,which was set for grade 7, all that my children did was laugh at the notion that I would ever play it., That spurred me on!
The Bach recording by Angela Hewitt of the prelude and fugue in C minor,is lovely to listen to , and has given me an idea of the piece. It's great coming back to music after such a long time, but find myself very lacking in in depth knowledge.
Having said that both of my exam candidates passed with distinction, so something must be right
