I have just given one of my grade 1 students her final lesson before her exam on Monday morning. It occurred to me that this was the last time I would hear Creepy Crawly for hopefully quite a while. I'm sure examiners are glad to see the end of Creepy Crawly too, given that 92% of grade 1 candidates presented it last year.

Hello Noodle
I am an adult learner and took grade one last year and played Creepy.....I like it and people I play it to also like it.....Is it being picked on unfairly...

Absolutely not! I quite like it too, but when you hear it played by so many students for over two years its just a bit much. I was accompanying children doing violin exams on Thursday and I heard a few pianists playing it- with the wrong rhythm too!

"Creepy Crawly" last season and now, from what I heard at my local centre the other day, and from the choice most of my pupils are making, everyone's doing "In the Pink" for Grade 1.

I wonder if that will make 92% by the end of 2006?!

All mine want to play this much too fast. I've starting issuing speed tickets biggrin.gif

I have a couple who have chosen Sleeping Cat.

Creepy Crawly was a great piece. Even though I've heard it a million times, I'm missing it already.

i love creepy crawly! if people enjoy playing it then that's a good thing!

In the Pink doesn't seem as popular as Creepy Crawly with my students - so far! Some have chosen Sleeping Cat (because my cat often sleeps during their lessons) and a few have chosen Goldfishes.

the Steward at our centre said the popular one so far where we are is Das Echoe

Yes! So far all my Grade 1 students have chosen Das Echo for their B piece.

I've had one person chose that one. The others have gone for the Diabelli Bagatelle...which I prefer anyway :-)

What an odd statistic! Where did you find it? - I'd love to have a similar collection of random numbers to trot out!

Funnily enough I had a very odd pupil who played creepy crawley for grd1 and also made up a dance to it where she pretended to be an insect. (!) I didnt quite manage to keep a sraight face when she showed me! I seem to get the 'interesting' pupils! hehe

If that was anything like the same in 2003 (i.e. 92% of grade one people playing it), then (using the statistics in the press section) that means creepy crawly was played in 24.9% of all ABRSM piano exams! And that includes all of the other grades.... (Okay, so the statistics are slightly dodgy because those results cover all instruments, but assuming that the overall distribution across piano exams is represented by that across all instrument exams then it's true...).

i played creepy crawly for one of my pieces in grade 1. The tune is a bit annying after a while so i feel sorry for examiners that had to listen to it all the time

Does anyone have a score/recording that they could put on here of this "famous piece" creepy crawly?! I started with the grade 4 exam and so have never heard it and would like to!

no, but go and buy the book, its only a few £'s!!

or ask your teacher. I'm sure he/she has a copy you could look at.

It may be fairly simplistic, but it is one of the easiest for them to get the timing wrong on! they do have to count.

Also creepy crawly is in the piano time jazz book 1, which for any higher grades wanting a go is a fun book for a bit of sight reading.
