Hello
I will probably seem very dim now but I am having trouble converting Simple to compound time and vice versa.
Some of it seems ok just by looking at it I can work it out..but I haven't worked out the theory (numbers and value wise) yet.
In compound time a dotted crotchet for eg..becomes an ordinary crotchet in simple time....ie two thirds of its original value...
In a sample I am converting from compound time it shows a quaver and two quaver rests. How do I convert this..and what time value is two thirds that of a quaver...
Thanks in anticipation of your help....

I may be completely wrong but would it not be a triplet with the first being a quaver of the triplet and the second and third parts being two quaver rests?

biggrin.gif Hello Appassionata... biggrin.gif
You are brilliant...and it's so obvious...that it's a triplet ...and obvious that you are brilliant as well.
Thanks for that ..will put you on my Christmas Card list....

I still find the actual maths of it a bit confusing though...

I am so glad I'm not alone with my time signature problem! laugh.gif

Thats right. So when you go from compound to simple find the note at has the same value in the new time signature.

6/8 - dotted crotchet, 3 quavers
( 1 beat, 3 x 1/3 beat)
2/4 - crotchet, 3 triplet quavers
(1 beat , 3 x 1/3 beat

Hope thats not too confusing. You would think that on a music website we would have access to crotchets/quavers etc!
