I'd say if you are unsure then learn the piano. I'm meant to be starting lessons soon. My flute teacher says that tis a good thing to learn - it helps with theory and if you ever get into teaching its a good thing to have. But saying that- learn something that you really want to learn - theres nothing worse than playing and instrument that you dont want to play

I LOVE the piano, it's simply a divine instrument but it does need quite a lot of hard work, as do most instruments but I've often been told that piano is the hardest to learn to play........not sure why. However I love the piano because you can do almost anything on it and it can't often sound bad (unless there's a 5year old kid constantly banging on it) that really annoys me - hee hee !! But seriously you should cinsider it if you love playing music because piano's also FAB for composing songs on, I'm a composer so I wouldn't be able to LIVE without my piano. Sorry I probably do sound crazy and insane but I really do love my piano hehe xxxxxxxxxxxx

But Imagine if every person in the world was playing the cello at the same time, and everyone was using different keys at different times, playing different songs at different times..........I think that might be too many cellists........
the cello does sound lovely in a string quartet though I must agree

piano helps in theory, and many music unis require at least a grade 5 skill in piano

I'd say piano because it's really useful for being able to think about harmony and chords and things.

Oboe: Don't even consider it. Difficult on a good day, and you need to be good at it to make it sound any good.
Cello: OK, but who wants to carry a cello around?
Clarinet: Not a bad choice but loads of people play clarinet - you'd fade into the crowd a bit.
Piano: I voted this, but...I'd pick a slightly more quirky instrument. Maybe instead of a regular Bb clarinet go for bass clarinet?

yes thats a realy good idea, bass clartinet roks theres a guy in our school band who plays it its low and every thing although if u did lern it u if u were to play in ensembles u would always get the boring bass line parts which are neva fun, i play tenor sax and we nearly always get borin parts mostly twined with lower brass instruments.
u really want something which graps the attention of ppl.
i met a double bassist just the other day and she was cool she had only bin playin 2 yrs and she was amazin!! hav u thought about that!

Piano is quite useful (I think).
