Hello is anyone doing the ABRSM G8 piano syllabus if so what pieces are you playing??
I am studying
A3 - Sonata in D - Scarlatti
B4 - Sonata op 79 - Beethoven (in fact just did this in national eistedfod got 22/30 - not bad seeing as though i've just learnt the piece)
and from the C list i dunno yet, i started the Chopin Polonaise but i didn't like the way it sounds when i play it, its just to jumbled
maybe the schumann intermezzo but thats quite hard..
and also the scales ARE KILLING ME!

I did:
A list: Sonata in D - Scarlatti
B list: Beethoven sonata in E minor
C list: debussy's arabesque(sorry i can't spell

)
i think arabesque is the best one out of the C list...
the Autumn weed one seems nice too

was it even the name of it??

forgot it already, did it so long ago

A1 J S Bach Allemande (almost at the end now)
B2 Mozart K330 (Started about a month ago)
C9 Debussy Arabesque no.1 (I have the music... not started yet.)
Choice of C piece has been hard... most of them seem to have such big stretches in.
I'm pretty well on top of the scales(but not so good at staccato) as I've been playing them for longer than I care to remember.. way before I started the pieces.

yea the scarlatti in list A is really nice and popular as i can see.
andante_in_c - i also really like the clementi, i heard a girl play it in our national eistedfod and it was brilliant.
LIST C is the HARDEST to choose don't you think! i don't like very many of the pieces. ive been listening 2 the CD to help me choose (does any1 else use the CD much>>????)
i wish i was on top of my scales!! also im having to go for seperate aural lessons with a different teacher cos im so bad!!!

Neither did I, but its a nice piece. Do you know it?
Some of my grade 8 students are doing Arabesque, the rest are doing Autumn Crocus.

Crocuses are not weeds especially not the Autumn Crocus (also known as meadow saffron), well at least not to most, by definition weeds are "Any plant that is growing in a place where a human wants a different kind of plant or no plants at all." but anyway . . .

I was going to play Autumn Crocus for my exam but I decided on the Liszt instead, I love them both though.

My teacher said that she found the Liszt so depressing that she would be slitting her wrists within a fortnight....
That eliminated that one.....
Rather liked it myself.

I'm hopefully taking it this summer
I'm working on: A:1- Bach- Allemande
B:2- Mozart- Allegro Moderato
C:6- Takemitsu- Romance or C:7- Albeniz- Castilla
(I enjoy the Takemitsu, but my teacher doesn't think it's a good choice for the exam- so she started me on the Albeniz, which is also a lovely piece. I would do the Debussy arabesque, but i learned it agesa ago and have played it to death

Are you seroius? I have had to teach (and learn) many pieces which I didn't particularly like. One of my students was studying a particular composer (mentioning no name incase I start another riot) at university and wanted to play some of his piano music. It was horrendous - it made me want to stick my head in a gas oven, but I didn't stop her learning it.

Ok.. the way I put it sounds a bit brutal... it was just one part of the process of making a choice, in which I have been encouraged to contribute.
As at first hearing of the choices on the CD my first reaction was something like... 'You must be kidding if you think I can ever play ANY of those!!'.... I really had no very strong preference and I am quite open to having a go at most things, having found out that often the ones you start out not being sure of can grow on you as you get to know them.

Sbhoa, my choice is identical to yours! Hope both of us (and all of us of course) will be doing well in the exam.
I'm working hard on my scales by following your "scales rota", it works really well for me. I always want to thank you personally by using a PM but it's still not available, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank you here.
I have basically learnt all three pieces but the Mozart one still needs polishing - it's so hard to play it well. Regarding Arabesque No.1 , the suggested tempo that I have found is crotchet=132, but I am not sure whether it would be too fast for andantino (as andantino means slightly faster than andante but may also mean slightly slower, I am not sure whether I should play it faster or slower than andantino in this case). I just wonder what other people think.
I have entered myself for Oct/Nov exam and I am in deep worry now, because it will be my first piano exam after school and a 19 years break. I'm so nervous.....

Happy to hear that you found the scales rota useful.
I suppose there are many ways of keeping all those scales etc going but that works well for me.
