Hi
I'm doing my Grade 8 flute in december and am not sure which pieces to do.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Poulenc, Poulenc, Poulenc! Whoa, a little obsessed. Anyway...
What repertoire have you recently been playing? Maybe try something totally different!

Poulenc
I say, Mozart, Rutter's Suite Antique

I took my grade 8 flute 3 weeks ago. I did the mozart, john rutter suite antique and Fantaise no7 (teleman) Another great piece is the York Bowen sonnata - its slow and lovely and you can do so much with it - I'm regretting not playing it in my exam now - but I still did ok.
Play or listen to as many pieces on the list as possible and see which ones you like the sound of.
Good luck with it all

I have to agree, I love the Waltz (I am learning it at the moment) from Suite Antique, and the Bowen is gorgeous too

I agree with Rutter/Mozart, I'd go for one of the telemann fantasias for the study (hasten to add that I can't actually play any of the grade 8 bits very well, but those are my faves!) if I was doing grade 8 and was confident I'd be able to manage whatever I wanted to learn, those would be my choices I think.

Ooh, this is an interesting thread - especially as I just showed my flute teacher the list of grade 8 pieces at my flute lesson today. I think I'll skip grade 7 flute and go directly to 8 (well in a year or so)! That will probably give me more motivation to practice (I'm feeling rather out of it at the moment)!
Anyway, my teacher reccommended the Mozart as well, and she said that Poulenc is nice, as is this person called something with M with a ° on the last letter (<-- sorry, not v. specific). And Telemann fantasias are always great - I'd definately go for that if I were you! Number 12 is lovely!
Good luck, and the biggest piece of advice is probably to get the CD and choose which ones sound nicest/most interesting! Keep us posted!

martinu (don't know how to do the little circle!) I've played that, although I'm probably not going to do it for the exam, it's a beautiful piece, and lots of fun to play! for my exam, I'm most likely to do the bach sonata, the poulenc and telemann fantasy no 9. I've also played the pan et les bergers by mouquet, also lovely, the boehm study, which is nice but as I did it before I did grade 7 (I think- might have been straight after) I found it quite tricky! and the Eldin Burton sonatina which is absolutely beautiful! but I wouldn't recommend it as an exam piece (& neither would my teacher) unless you really take to it, because theres so much in it that can easily go wrong, especially if you're nervous. And also, danse de le chevre, which is also lovely! I think most of the list is lovely actually...

I love the Waltz, but because of revision I haven't had time to practice which is a shame as it has got me so motivated this piece

Practising the flute adn revising for your exams is difficult. I'm glad my exam was when it was (March) otherwise I dont think I would have coped!

Yes, my exam was in March, I couldn't do it during my GCSEs, but I'll have to have it during exam time during A Levels, as my teacher says there is no easy time in post 16 to take an exam.
