Have sent in entry for grade 7 & dug out Ronald Smith "aural training in practise" to see in detail what's needed, It has to be said I actually wasn't very well at the time and possibly my brain was slightly addled but the part on cadences & identifying the chords & the modulation was as clear as mud.
So has anyone any suggestions of ? a theory book so I understand the theory of the whole thing better before i try to put it into a practical situation. Or other aural workbooks that I might find useful.

Try ABC of Aural Awareness Grade 7 by Roy Wilkinson and Maria Chen. A CD is available separately and the sections on cadences and modulations have preparatory exercises which you could play on the piano to familiarise yourself with what each cadence/modulation sounds like. The section on chords and cadences in your grade 5 theory should be enough as a starting point.

Thanks Noodle I will try to get hold of that.
I think the problem is that my grade 5 theory is too far away to be very meaningful - that's why i think i need to go over theory as well as just trying to practise what is wanted in the aural

Thats right. I now remember the post a few days ago about the evidence of passing grade 5 theory. I get so confused about who says what on these boards! All you need to revise would be the chapters on Cadences and Chords in Music Theory in Practice Grade 5. I would look at the ABC aural book first. The theory of the chords etc is explained so you may not need to look at grade 5 theory.

Dear Andy,
I am doing grade 7 piano in about 2 months time and I also have found the grade 7 aural quite tricky. I don't seem to be able to recognise the modulations. Modulating from a major key to its relative minor is pretty straightforward since you can really hear the change from major to minor. However, modulating to the subdominant or dominant is harder. I really can't identify either when just listening to the modulations. To be honest, I am hoping that I do well in the other sections of the exam so that if I don't do too well in the aural, I will still pass.
I wish you luck!

Thanks Shelton!! I didn't imagine it was supposed to be easy but you've just confirmed it for me.
Well I have made some progress in that at least i know what it's talking about now- always a good start I think! Just trying to track down the cd that noodle was talking about - can get hold of the book but can't find the cd. Anybody any ideas?

I can't seem to find it on the internet either, but there are a few other grade 7 aural cds available. I will try and remember to ask Amy next week where she got it.
