I have an audition on tuesday (i know ths is short notice but I only heard about it today) and I have to play two contrasting pieces, but I am not sure that my best pieces contrast enough. I am thinking of playing Sonata in G major by CPE Bach and Minuet from L'arlésienne suite no 2. These are both on the trinity syllabus which Andante_in_c said have built in contrast. But do they contrat enough for an audition?

I don't know that particular CPE movement, but assume it's fast enough to provide a contrasing tempo with the Bizet. You will certainly have a contrast in style and period with those two composers. What is the articulation like in the Bach? The Bizet is nearly all legato, so does the Bach show evidence of tonguing and staccato? If it does, then you're fine. If the Bach is legato too, you might need to find a piece with more staccato.

Well I have my audition results now. I didn't get into concert band.

Since I played my exam pieces, it looks like I'm going to fail that as well.

It took a lot not to get upset on the bus when I got my results... so much so I nearly missed my stop for college.

Sorry to hear your news. It's very disappointing when you've put all that work in. But please don't assume you're going to fail the exam as well. The audition is competitive: you have more flautists than places I imagine, so you can put your lack of success down to there being others players auditioning who perhaps showed more of what they were looking for on the day.
The exam, however, isn't competitive. The examiner can pass as many people as s/he wants to who meet the required standard. The audition isn't a mock exam because they are marked in a completely different way.
Hope all goes well in your exam preparation. We'll all be rooting for you.

Not getting in does NOT mean you will fail your exam.
Several reasons: your audition was very short notice - your exam is not.
You have two more months prep before your exam.
There are a limited number of places for flute in any band... there is no such limit to how many people are allowed to pass their flute exams.
So... this does NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, mean you will fail your flute exam... so don't even think that way!

I totally agree with andante in c & sarah flute. Please try not to feel too down about it - the exam will be fine I'm sure. Your teacher would never have suggested it if they didn't think you were playing at that standard. Auditions are a bit like playing at festivals - it's about choosing someone whose playing the judges liked best on that day. Exams are completely different (thank goodness).

What? So he made you audition and then failed you??
Don't panic, it was really short notice! You have ages till your exam: you'll be absolutely fine!

That was pretty mean of him
But still... you have two more months... you have masses of time... you auditioned on VERY short notice... so please don't think you will automatically fail your exam. I'm sure you won't!

I'm sorry you had bad news of your audition. But don't let it get you down too much - auditions aren't exams, and there's a different mentality. Examiners are trying to find reasons to pass you (yes, honestly) but people running auditions tend to be (in my somewhat battered experience) looking for reasons to fail you. So auditions tend to be a LOT worse than exams.
Look at it this way - when you play brilliantly and pass your exam with flying colours (which I'm sure you will) you'll also be showing the band conductor exactly what he's missing - poor chap!
So think to yourself "Tough - he had his chance to have me in his band and he blew it!" and then put it behind you and move on.
Good luck

Just got back from flute choir, he said I am 1st reserve this year! So, when the new academic year starts if any drops out (which happens at a startling rate in that band

) I get in

P.S. Makes a change from 3rd reserve like last year!
