I am hoping to do the diploma in clarinet teaching. I already have grade 8 clarinet, but I also need grade 6 theory. There are substituions listed, but does anyone know if a university music degree would be considered acceptable? Even if the content is not matched exactly, it surely shows the same level of knowledge, as I have done composing, orchestration, history, among others.

It's an interesting question - I'm in a similar boat, and have been looking at the dip syllabus and wondering about substitutions.

I think I did grade 6 theory, but it's ages ago and I wouldn't have a hope of finding the certificate.

I graduated from the RCM where I did loads of harmony and counterpoint, including two diplomas as well as the final, all of which included harmony papers of course. I would think in your case the music degree shows a level of knowledge well above grade 6!

I have another small problem though - I don't have grade 8 in the instrument I'd want to do the dip in (piano). I'd be relying on appropriate professional experience, (good exam results with pupils??) plus grade 8 in another keyboard instrument. It all seems a bit too complicated !

I'll be very interested to read other replies. Good luck with your diploma Neil.

I had one of the listed substitutions for Grade 6 theory - an Open University course - but I took it so long ago I couldn't find any of the details, and I wasn't sure if the Board would accept a screen print of my records on the OU website!

In the end I just entered myself for Grade 6 theory (which I had already passed under the old, no longer valid syllabus) and retook it.

It was worth it because I got a distinction and a nice cheque from the AB. biggrin.gif

Grade 6 Practical Musicianship is an accepted substitute for grade 6 theory with regard to the Dipabrsm and grade 8 for the LRSM. In fact I found grade 8 Practical Musicianship easier than grade 6. If you already have a music degree you would probably find it VERY easy. I would recommend any teachers, or potential teachers out there, take a look at the syllabus.

I coached a student through Grade 6 Practical Musicianship. He really enjoyed it, and passed with a high mark, and I think it developed skills he will use day to day as a musician in the future. I would certainly recommend it-as Margaret says, at your level of experience it should be pretty straightforward.

Thanks. I don't quite have my degree yet, but should do in a few weeks.

I have a BEd (music) degree but this did not prove to be a substitution for grade 6 theory. You need to have a transcript of your music course detailing the theory components that you have done. My degree was 1984 and the institution has since closed down. So I needed to take grade 6 theory - managed 84% after very little revision!
However since you are just completing your degree course you could ask one of your tutors for a letter regarding the theory components of your degree and this should cover you for grade 6 theory - and maybe even grade 8 theory! wink.gif

Why don't you just do Grade 6 in the summer? If you've nearly completed a music degree, you should pass it easily with very little revision. I did it 12 years after doing Grade 5 and 3 years after A level music with minimal work and managed a merit. You won't find it a problem!

Scary - just sending off my application for my Dip in Clarinet Performance - ah! ohmy.gif
