Is it me or does the room size affect my playing?

I realised that when I attend my flute class, I actually play in this really squashy room, about half the size of a standard classroom and this makes me really nervous and I can't play properly...and my notes go all wonky and I can't reach like even a basic A2.

But then, in school, when I am in the prforming ensemble hall, my notes come out perfectly, and smoothly! laugh.gif
I can control my dynamics more easily too.

Sometimes in flute class, i want to tell my teacher that the small room and him watchng me play in that small room is making me nervous. sad.gif but i can't coz it's his house.

The size of the room could affect playing in terms of sounds, but I think when you perform in front of a teacher, you are more nervous as you can feel them watching you. Maybe it is that rather than the size of the room.

I have exactly the same problem with my lesson - room quite full of furniture, carpet, lowish celing - and the sound that i thought was OK at home sounds awful. I think playing in front of someone also has an effect as does having to start on a piece straight away from cold.

I practise (and teach) in a room with terrible acoustics. I always tell my students if they sound good there, they'll sound even better anywhere else. smile.gif

If I want a boost to my ego I move into our new extension, which has a wooden floor and a vaulted ceiling. I also get students to play in there if they're going in for local festivals, to get used to the echo.

Yes, I know the feeling! But with me it's usually the other way round! The sound I produce at my house is okay (I'm used to it) but the room where I have my lessons is a lovely big class room that makes everything I play sound so much nicer! Kind of frustrating when I return home!

Couldn't you maybe ask your teacher whether you could have your lessons in a different room at his house? If he's a good teacher he should be sympathetic! Otherwise, make sure to invite him to every concert you perform at so he can hear your gorgeous tone at school! smile.gif

I always used to learn in a very small practice room at school. It had quite good accoustics and when I went home to practice my playing always sounded rubbish!

I discovered recently that I sound really different in the bathroom... lol... I was experimenting, not playing in the bath. It's worth trying out different rooms, you hear different things that are good/bad about your playing.

Mostly bad in my case sad.gif

Considering how well you've done after playing such a short time Andy, I don't think that can really be true!!
