Please please please does anybody have any advice?
I have to give a 40 minute recital for my degree next week and I have just bene allowed to pratctise in the hall where the recital will happen. Problem is, i'm not used to singing in that hall and it bigger than I'm used and the echo is really extreme. I know that some of the echpo will go when it fills with people but when I was practising I can;t finsh - and I'm a soprano and I',m finsihing with Brittesn "Tell me the truth about love" and "Calypso" and I cant get down to the top A because my voice is so tired because I think I'm oversinging to compensate for the size of the hall

Any advice would be gratefully rceieved!

Don't panic! And don't oversing/strain to fill the hall, otherwise you will have no voice left next week! I'm sorry, I don't really have very good advice, but I would just relax and sing at your usual volume, or maybe use a microphone (?) and I'm sure you'll be fine when there is an audience there to muffle sdsome of the echoes. Personally, I'd rather hear someone sing really well, albeit a little quiet, than hear someone screaming (exaggerated) to fill the whole hall!

Hope all goes well! smile.gif

Can you get a friend to come into the hall with you next time you practise? Get them to stand at various places around it while you sing, and tell you the quietest you can go without losing clarity. You will probably be surprised at how quietly you can sing and still be heard.

Concentrate on your diction - the better that is, the quieter you'll be able to sing and the audience will still hear you.

And finally - don't over-practice just before the event (this one is spoken from the heart!!) I'm terrible at following my own advice - always feel I have to 'test' my top notes one more time, to make sure they're still there, and sooner or later they aren't...

Good luck & let us know how it went!
