I was just wondering what other trombone players preffered to play in, e.g. orchestras, big bands, brass bands etc. I play in: brass band; orchestras; big band; small ensembles and a theatre orchestra. I could ramble for hours about the various advantages and disadvantages of each, but I'll spare you (unless you want to hear it) and just wanted to know the general opinion!

The only place i really dont like playing trombone is in the orchestra as you only ever seem to get to play two notes at fff and then have 48 bars rest... loose count and then miss the only two other notes you have in the whole piece.
Though it does annoy me as a bass trombone/bass clef player that the 1st and second parts in brass bands are often written in treble clef and the key of your instrument changes....
Soo silly

Yes i'd go along with that observation regarding Orchestral playing and trombone parts, now give me a jazz big band any day and a 32 bar solo, now were talking. No wonder Orchestras struggle to find bone players

I probably favour wind band, but big band's good. Symphony orchestra pieces are sometimes ok, but there are often too many rests, and composers have this tendency to shove the music into random clefs (e.g. tenor and alto)!

No competition here I am afraid, it has to be Big Band!
