I have took my grade 5 theory exam in 22th January, and I got my result in March, but the mark of the exam which was failed, it was 58/100. After that, I felt so sad. Also, my mother told me if I fail in the next theory exam in June, then she will not let me to learn piano. So, I fell very worry about that. My piano teacher said that I played the piano quite well, and we have bought the Grade 7 piano exam book. However, I didn't pass in the theory exam.If I don't get pass in the next theory exam, what shall I do?

Lots of past papers. One a week until the exam at least. Don't forget to get them marked and you answers discussed though.
Pay much more attention to the music you are playing.. to be playing at grade 7 standard, especially on piano, you must have come across most of what you need to pass grade 5 theory. (unless either you were just allowed to play without thinking or you just chose not to take any notice because you decided you didn't want to learn theory...).

Hi

To be able to pass your Grade 5 Theory well, you do need to have had a large number of productive theory lessons with your teacher. You need to feel confident that you have been taught and understand every aspect of the exam, even if you don't always get the answers 100% correct. To achieve 58/100 would suggest that you didn't fully understand everything and maybe went into the exam unprepared?

I think that your teacher should take some of the responsibility for you losing nearly 50% of your marks. You should talk about this with your mother, and she should then discuss this with your teacher and ask your teacher why he/she thinks you failed and what you should do to pass next time.

Do you feel confident with the Circle of 5ths, Intervals, Orchestral Instruments, composition, time, ornaments, etc. etc.? All my Grade 5 theory students have passed their exam well (the lowest achieving 86/100 and the highest 94/100), but I have spent a lot of time preparing them and making sure they understand each concept/question fully. I have also prepared my own teaching materials for them on all aspects of the exam, e.g. orchestral instrument ranges, circle of 5ths etc.

If you'd like any further advice regarding your Grade 5 theory exam, please contact me.

Good luck!

Don't panic about the theory!

Grade 5 theory is not so difficult. It's when you reach grade 6 theory, then all the cool stuff starts coming in.

Get workbooks and work through it slowly. and as sbhoa said, get some past year papers. Look through them, see what questions they ask you, because they use the same format of questions each year smile.gif

and ask your teacher for help!!!! laugh.gif

Is there anything in particular that caused you to fail? Intervals, transposition, continuing a melody? If there was then you should work harder on these areas. Like sbhoa said, past papers are very useful. In the term leading up to my exam I completed one a week and my teacher marked them very strictly but it worked as I passed my exam with distinction.

Good luck!

I feel it is very unfair that you will not be allowed to carry on learning piano if you don't pass this next exam as it puts a lot of pressure on you which is not going to help. I am taking grade 5 theory in June too and my piano teacher has been giving me past papers to take and then in my lessons we go through them and any answers I have got wrong I make sure that I read up on those parts of the exam that week. Do you know which parts of the exam you struggled with as if you do you could work really hard on those to make sure you understand them. You were only 8 marks off a pass so just revise on the things that carry a lot of marks.

Good luck with your exam, I'm sure you'll do well, you were probably just nervous as if you're ready to take G7 then you're obviously capable.

P.S. Maybe you could talk to your mum and explain how much you enjoy playing (assuming that you do tongue.gif) and then see if she could perhaps buy you some study books that explain grade 5 theory clearly as I know I found the AB guide to music theory a nightmare to read!! blink.gif

HI!
Don't worry about it! II did my grade 5 at the same time, and got 100%, so i will tell u wat i did to achieve that.
First i read through the red little grades 1-5 text book on each subject while i was working on the exercises in the work book, then i simplified it and wrote simple rules down. So i did that for each subject, then, about 1 1/2 months before the exam, i did lots of past papers to get used to the questions.
But most important, DONT GIVE UP! It sounds like your good if u r on grade 7 piano, so it would be a shame to give it up, so if you are determined not to give it up, then dont let it be possibe, and just work hard and get the grades!
Good luck!
