A semitone is the interval between notes 3-4 and 7-8 in a major scale.

If you look on a piano or keyboard, it's the smallest interval you can see, between any two notes that have no other note between them.

Semitone = half a tone ie C to D is a whole tone as it has C# in between.

C to C# is a semitone as is E to F as there is no note in between.

Interval = distance between 2 notes, including the note you started from, ie C to D is a 2nd, C to G is a 5th

Hope this helps a little?

A semitone is half a step between two notes. For example E to F or G to G#. I think intervals are hang on I cant remember Ill go and have a look in my theory book. I should know by now.

If you play a note, and then play a higher or lower note, the distance in pitch between them is called and 'interval'. It is a 'melodic' interval if the two notes are played on after the other, or a 'harmonic' interval if they are played together.

The size of an interval is measured by the number of degrees of the scale it inlcudes. The number of degrees is the 'number' of the interval. It is not affected by the key signature, or by any sharps, flats or naturals which the notes may have before them.

For example, if you were to play a G and the B above it, that interval is a 3rd. If you were to play an A and the F above it that interval is a 6th. If you were to play a B and the B an octave above it, that interval is 8ve (ocatve).

A semi-tone is a half step from any note, up or down. For example, F and F Sharp are a semi-tone apart, so are B and B Flat. Also, B and C, and E and F are both semi-tones apart.

Hi James

Semitones and intervals are basically just the space between notes. You will learn about intervals when studying theory but a semitone is just a step up or down from the note you are already on. For example if you were on D then a semitone DOWN from that woud be D flat or C sharp depending on which way you want to look at it. And the same for going up as well, if you were on D again then a semitone UP from that would be D sharp or E flat. Hope I've explained this clearly but if you need any more help then just send a another message and I'd be happy to reply to you.

P.S. Good luck smile.gif

A semitone is the distance between say F and Fsharp, or B and Bb.

Intervals are the distances between two notes. Have a look at the AB Guide to music Theory Part One Page 46.

All the best.

yes - those are semitones.

Bigger intervals are easy if you just count the number of letter names;
eg C-F = CDEF = 4, a fourth.
