Jo-
1st Tip: you are not usless!
2nd Tip: It is beteter to get a tutor but do you know anyone that plays sax alreay because they could give you some tips
3rd Tip: try buying a book like tune a day or abracadcabra sax
4th tip: ask some musical friends to help you to learn the learning of the notes. I have found music easier with people helping me

and lastly: HAVE FUN biggrin.gif
pianoman84
can you have lessons at school, or ask another sax player to help?

Try and talk to your music teacher at school. They should be able to sort something out for you.
Go for it!

Hi Jo,

Being dyslexic does NOT mean that you can't do something. It may sometimes mean you won't, but obviously isn't your case, so we are already half way there.

Can I ask where you are based Jo please, so if we are in your area, may be able to offer further advise.

Good Luck,

Sarah

This may seem like an odd question but do you have an instrument? I was just wondering, since you said you can't afford a tutor book if you already have an instrument or will need to get one of those too (a lot more expensive than a tutor book!).

My advice to you, since you say you are only fourteen, is to nag your parents as much as you can to pay for you get lessons (sorry to all the parents on this site who probably think this is annoying advice wink.gif) and tell them how much you really want to do it; it's a lot easier to learn from a teacher than from a book. Maybe you could try offering to do jobs to help around the house to 'earn' the money from them to pay for your lessons, then they'll see how keen you are. If that fails then at least you can convince them that a tutor book is a lot cheaper than lessons so they can at least buy you that tongue.gif particularly if you already have an instrument which is expensive and would be a shame to waste.

Good luck.

Sorry, I forgot to add another thing: you need an instrument!

Well, for one thing, I know Leicestershire Arts (the music part of the council - I think), do a scheme where if you buy an instrument through the school, then you don't have to pay VAT, and so get the instrument at a cheaper price. Talk to your music teacher at school about this, ask whether a sax teacher comes to your school.

I found some websites which might help you:
* Arts in Education site - http://www.leics.gov.uk/artsined
* Instrument Tuition page from Leicestershire Arts -http://www.leics.gov.uk/new_servicepagestheme.htm?initial=&pid=51&theme=T3

Hi,

A good start would be to take the sax to a music shop, let their woodwind person have a play on it. They will at least be able to tell you if it is in need of a lot of work, rather than relying on friends...... who may not be as expert as they think!

At least then you'll have a starting point and will know if the sax is in a state that will play.

Good luck.

If you give up riding (which is generally expensive) then probably saxophone will be no more of an expensive hobby (maybe less so) - is there any particular reason your parents would be annoyed if you gave up riding?
country_bumpkin
I've had to choose music over riding recently. I used to share an ex-racehorse as well! I do love music tho, def dont regret it!
