Full Version: Are Musicians Cat People Or Dog People?
Forums > ABRSM > Students
Emma C
It is evident that there are several 'cat people' on the forums. I am a cat person, a singer, and play woodwind. One day, I hope to learn piano.

It would be interesting to see whether musicians are mostly 'cat people' or 'dog people', and if for example, brass players are mostly 'dog people' and singers mostly 'cat people'.

Please state if you consider yourself to be a 'cat person' or a 'dog person' (or neither, or both) and what instrument you play. 'Cat people' and 'dog people' are said to have different temperaments (but maybe that's a load of rubbish!) - is this reflected in people's choice of instrument? It might be fun to find out!!!! laugh.gif

(Yes, I'm a bit mad too... and we haven't had a poll for a while) cool.gif

Hmmmm, it's said that 'cat people' tend to be the independent free thinking types, while 'dog people' are more conservative and are happy to just go along with the pack.

I adore cats and cats adore me. I even find cats that supposedly have a reputation for being timid or spiteful are happy to get up and sit on my lap. It amazes everyone. Just like cats though, I have a tendancy to listen to only one person - myself - so maybe me and cats are on similar mental wavelengths.

I do love dogs (in fact all animals - I even owned a horse for 7 years!), but generally I don't bond with canines quite as well as felines.

On the instrument front, I play the violin, but my cat absolutely hates the high notes - possibly too many overtones for sensitive feline ears - and he always leaves the room when I play. He loves the cello and will quite happily sit in the same room as someone playing the cello. He doesn't appear to like higher-ranged woodwind instruments either, apart from the clarinet because acoustically the clarinet lacks many of the overtones found in the oboe, flute etc.

Cats all the way, although I love dogs too! I play the flute, sometimes when I play in the dining room, one of my 3 cats comes up to the door and meows along!!

I voted dogs

Got a cat. It eats. It sleeps. It eats. It sleeps...

I am definitely a cat person!I love most animals(even if I didn't,I wouldn't harm them),but I especially LOVE cats!!! laugh.gif

When I play "Lullaby",he goes to sleep(isn't that what he's supposed to do?) and he sits and listens to me...(I am crazy about him)

By the way,I play the piano and violin...

I'm exactly the same... cats gravitate toward me!

However, I put "both" because I love dogs too although I'm definitely *more* of a cat than a dog person.

My main instrument is flute, although my longest-learned is the violin.

I'm definitely a melody instrument person rather than a pianist etc, I love the piano but I struggle!

There are a few other instruments I play but those are the ones I'd count into this sort of survey type thingymabob.
AnotherPianist
Cat person and pianist.
katyjay
Cats. Definitely.

Cheers

I voted both, because I love both, but thinking more about it now, I would say that I am a dog person. My German Shepherd still thinks he can sit on my lap at 2 years old. He loves the piano and will fall asleep next to me while I play, but if I am learning a new piece, he will always look up if I make a mistake. He hates woodwind and brass though. biggrin.gif When my mum starts to play, he moans and tries to bite her.
Our cat on the other hand, though I love her to bits, prefers to live next door.

Same here...it's cats all the way for me!

But, if i play my cello around my dog then she'll always have a bit of a boogie without fail!!!
Cats don't tend to respond to music as much/as well.

Still cats though!

I don't think being a musician determines whether you are a cat or a dog person, it's just personal preference. I myself prefer dogs (I have two - a bichon frise and a yorkshire terrier) coz generally they seem more loyal and loving but that's just my opinion smile.gif

hehehe how cute! laugh.gif

I find different cats react differently, and to different instruments/type of music.
Alibonebone!
I'm both, my cat is fantastic (hates my trombone playing - we're not all perfect!) and my old, sadly departed dog was fantastic too. Shame the dog tried to eat the cat............................. blink.gif
Rainbow
Cat person. Mainly a viola player but also a pianist and singer.
fluteandbassoon

I also voted dogs and I agree that dogs are a lot more enthusiastic, cats just seem to ...... sit there and stare at you.

I'm a total cat person. My cat has to stay outside because I'm allergic to her, but sometimes when I practice piano she'll come to the window and listen to me. smile.gif

My voice teacher and her family have 3 cats, a dog and a bearded dragon. It's a very interesting house...
ianfiat
Cats.
My cat will often come and sit on the piano when I am practising
Bagpuss
It goes without saying that Bagpuss is a cat person! When I am practising hand signs for Kodaly my big black and white boy, Felix, joins in doing "paw signs" - and yes, I do have photographic evidence on this. His "soh mi" is coming along very nicely......x
jpiano
I would say cat people definitely-and I don't really like dogs much anyway-most of them are too scary!
hgirl

I play the horn (for anyone that doesn't already know) tongue.gif

sax_girl
Cat person. They are more affectionate and don't need to go out for walks, and don't scare people... often! Although some do look a bit evil sometimes.... I can't help but think they're plotting against me!
Christmas Fairy
i have a gorgeous labrador puppy and i love him. soooo i'm deffinately a dog person biggrin.gif

So does my 2 year old Pointer!!! Do you think they ever grow out of this??? blink.gif

I can find cats sometimes cute, but generally they seem to be their own "people" and I suspect that they actually have humans as pets. Now if you really want to have a big welcome as soon as you come home, no matter how long you have left your poor friend on his own, then it has to be a dog. I read recently that dogs live perpetually in one of two states. Either being happy or preparing to be happy biggrin.gif . They never bear a grudge and are always trying to please you (though sometimes their lack of brain makes it difficult for them to realise that eating your glasses is NOT going to please you ohmy.gif ) Cats are more intelligent I think.

So I voted dog as there definitely seems to be more cat people here and I wanted to bouy the side up.

I have a theory that dog people drink tea, and cat people drink coffee. Maybe another poll is required??

I'm a dog person who drinks tea...

Lifestyle doesn't permit a dog, as much as I would like one, so I'm training my hamster to bark instead. Various family dogs in the past have had no objections whatsoever to my clarinet.

I don't think they do. He is definitely too stubborn to grow out of it, I think.

Yes, I agree. Mine jumps at me and sings, running backwards and forwards and bashing me with his tail.

Yes, I drink tea and am a dog person. How uncanny. I've noticed that trend in a lot of people now I think about it.

My cat rushes to meet me as soon as I get home, purring and miaowing madly. Although I love dogs (I have 2 afghan hounds), I'm definitely more of a cat person. My cat loves sitting next to me at the piano, but she hates it when I play the flute and doesn't like the higher strings of the viola. One of my dogs hates all my instruments, and the other doesn't seem to mind any of them.

I'm definitely a cat person, they seem to like me. biggrin.gif I play the piano, flute and recorder and I sing. I don't actually have a cat, though, I just adore them. smile.gif
