Have a look at the advice given to Natalie in the Viva Piano forum (near the bottom of the page): her question was about a grade 5 piece but the same techniques will apply.

Hi,

Actually i also have the same problem. Was trying to keep my left hand softer so that the piece sounds nicer, but just cant seemed to do it.

I am also doing Grade 7, which piece did you choose? Maybe we can help each other. smile.gif

Hi Helpless Girl

About the pieces, I choosed A2 Fantasia in C,B1 Etude in A,C3 Allegretto. It seems that my first song was very bad especially playing the semiquaver part.It sounds terrible. unsure.gif .Please help me to improve that part.Tq

Hi, I did the Etude in A and found the RH arpeggios really hard to get up to speed accurately, but I managed it in the end. I have the same prob. being left handed, my natural tendency is to thump out the bass as this is my dominant hand. However, after years of tedious practise, I now can control my left hand much more than the right, and can achieve a good balance.
My advice, listen very carefully to yourself, and work through sections of the piece varying the dynamics in both hands (i.e. LH piano, RH piano, then LH forte, RH piano, then LH piano, RH forte) until you can play really sensitively. It's also a matter of coordination, and so once you master the volume in each hand, work on "hearing" the balance until you are happy. Hope this help, soz if it's a tad confusing! tongue.gif

hey emma,

i did my grade 7 piano last year.......obviously if you'r right handed tits going to have better co-ordination. other suggesting general practice with your left hand, which will take time, there are a couple of things you can do to specifically improve your trills. I find lowering my wrist position makes it a lot easier to have a even tone between the fingers. Practising trills can be really irritating, because after a minute of so your hand starts to get tired and eventually seizes up.....DON'T practice for too long! i had real problems because i overdid it...you get repetitive strain injury sad.gif ! lol so bascially do it really slowly, wih a low wrist position, and only speed up when you can hold a totally even trill for 30 seconds. But give yourself time to rest...play something else in between! Hope it helps.
