Full Version: Pieces For Clarinet Diploma

This will probably be a while away, but I would really like to do the diploma in clarinet performance one day. I have the syllabus and have been looking through the pieces. I just did the Messager for my solo performance exam, and loved it. I like the Schumann as well. I would rather avoid Mozart for this, since it is too familiar.

I have good resources for programme notes, including the Oxford Companion to Music, and the History of Western Music (Grout and Palisca).

Anyone with ideas on pieces?
Deborah
Oh neil.clarinet, we're spoilt for choice! I might get round to doing the diploma one day, but there's loads of repertoire to choose from, without even having to learn new pieces.

I'd say to pick pieces which contrast in mood, genre, period. i.e. don't do movements from concerti by Crussell, Krommer and Weber in the same recital! Don't forget the own choice minutes you're allowed either. You already know my feelings on the Schumann Fantasiestucke from a previous post, but if you like them, go for it! After all, what's worse than having to constantly practice pieces you can't stand?

A pianist friend has some of my accompaniments at the moment, out of which I could conceivably do the DipABRSM: Rossini Introduction Theme and Variations, Finzi Bagatelles, Bernstein Sonata, Horovitz Majorcan Pieces, assorted concerti, plus the unaccompanied stuff. Even so, I've read enough posts around here to know that the performance, whilst a major part, is just one part: there's the Viva, Quick Study, Programme Notes, preparing to be part of the 50% who fail...

jo.clarinet is, I think, working towards the clarinet diploma, as is Appassionata, and possibly a few others. Can anyone provide neil.clarinet with further food for thought?

Let us know what you decide on.

Appassionata has done hers. smile.gif

Is Mozart not a good idea to do for a Dip?

Vaguely remember that, but I thought it was the Debussy you didn't like, but it is not until LRSM. And I was not happy my performance of it in my recital last Thursday. Thanks for advice re balance etc. That will be an issue to deal with as much as the actual pieces. As I say, it will be a while, so plenty of time to think.

Welcome back Nat. Trust us BOTH to disappear at the same! Good to be back here. Are you reconnected now?
Appassionata
Sorry Nat, I've not done my performance diploma, only the teaching one! laugh.gif I'm doing the performance one in July and i'm playing:

Krommer Clarinet Concerto Mvts 2 and 3
Gade Fantasistyker (?sp)
Templeton Pocket Size Sonata - own choice

Bit scared now though - don't think I'm ready. sad.gif

As I thought. laugh.gif

Good luck Appassionata. If the PM facility gets restored, would you like to discuss the teaching one with me? I'm sure you could help, having done it already.

I've prepared a programme for the performing Dip, and have even started on my programme notes, but I'm really not sure now whether to bother with it - I don't NEED it for anything, and there's so much other fantastic music to play (and as a very 'late starter', so few years, relatively, in which to play it all!!!). I keep being sidetracked by all the other pieces I have and want to improve on. So I may or may not do it.......

But, for what it's worth, my programme is:

Stamitz - Concerto in Bb
Gade - Fantasiestucke
Bartok - two of the Roumanian Folk Dances
Berio - Lied

The last two are 'own choice' pieces, and JUST about fit into the allotted 7 minutes!

Berio - Lied

I'm glad you're including this, Jo. I really enjoyed it at the Adult Learners' Concert

Cheers

I don't like either of them very much, but it would be a dull world if we all liked the same pieces.
