Which do you prefer and why?

Well I like performing better. Not because it's "easier" than composing but I enjoy performing infront of an audience smile.gif

i used to hate performing AND composing but now i love them both, i suppose composings best though

I reckon it must be performing. Well, I have to be composed to perform. Then I must perform what has been composed. Hmm is there a synergistic bond? Maybe the quanta from each medium coalesces in my fertile brain and spills out through my nimble digits to titillate your aural senses.

Gee - hope I didn't underperform my composition.

I like performing better just because it is easier for me. I still sometimes get a bit nervous in performing but I'm sure that will change sooner or later.
flute_gurl
performing definitely. I'm better at it, and I can't really explain it, but I really love it even though I get nervous before a performance
purple dolphin
I like composing more because once I've composed somethign I can perform it and people seem to appreciate the piece more if you have both composrd and performed it.

I have a problem with performing, unfortunately (because I actually love it) because I get really bad nerves and would rather run and hide before a performance. I would love to love performing, if that makes sense. sad.gif sad.gif

I enjoy composing but generally have the problem that I don't get further than the first few bars! rolleyes.gif

my problem with composing is i can hear how i want it in my head, but i can't write it down!

Have you got Sibelius? I usually find that it's easier to write stuff down there, because it plays the notes for you as you type them in, and so you can tell then whether that's how you want it.
flute_gurl
yes i do, and i agree it's much easier! But it still takes me a while to work it out (hearing problems make it difficult to work out the interval I want) & i have quite a short attention span, so I keep forgetting the end of the piece!

Thanks for your replies so far! I thought people might be swayed more towards when than the other, but there seems to be fairly balanced opinions.

I used to hate performing solos, until I played one on monday and wednesday, didn't get nervous at all for either and really enjoyed both! If you'd asked me last week which I preferred I'dve said composing! I still prefer composing, but performing has increased in likeablility!

flute gurl: could you not record yourself playing what you hear in your head, then you could have more time to write it down/remember it?

For some reason I can write down my own compositions without going near a piano, and starting from scratch, but I can never do aural dictations!

I love composing once i actually start because then its easy. But i also love performing (even though i get really bad nerves)

i never seem to think that my pieces are good enough to perform, i get embarrassed. unsure.gif sad.gif

I'm equally as terrible at both, so neither!
