This probably sounds stupid but am I the only one who is labelled a music geek for playing a musical instrument? huh.gif Since I play flute I also get the "Band Camp" Michelle from American Pie jokes. I'd like to hear from anyone who is in the same situation as me!

Constantly, Charl! In my case it is thankfully pretty harmless ...and don't forget that "Band Camp" was shown to be far from geeky & pedestrian in the film!!

Seriously, though, when I was younger I remember being embarrassed at times by playing an instrument, particularly when it meant missing out on more 'cool' activities (mostly sport). Looking back, the reason I stuck with it is the same reason I carried on playing an instrument, and still do many years later: the opportunity to express yourself, to be bold, and to be individual. Ignore the taunts (or, even better, play up to them!) and you'll not regret it.

Good luck!

Thanks pod0
I certainly do act up to the image, often having my friends in fits of laughter after saying the famous "Aren't instruments fun?!" line!

Hiya!

i play clarinet, and i get the american pie gags (and other horrible things) too, but i dont really care. Playing the clarinet is my favourite thing in the whole world, and nothing that people say or do can make me give it up. smile.gif

i started playing the clarinet in year 7 with my best mate, but she dropped out when the grade 1 exam came, and she has regretted it ever since!!

but dont worry, you arent alone!!! wink.gif

Hiya Becky im so glad you feel the same!!!! biggrin.gif

How long have you played clarinet? and do you play any other instruments?

I know what you mean about your friend regretting giving up the clarinet. I played the euphonium when i was in year 8 but i gave it up and now I wish I hadnt!!!!
