Eat lots of lots of apples! that will make your voice better, and everyone is talented to sing, just practice and sing with your heart, that is the secret. wink.gif

in my opinion u have to have a good voice to start off with you cannot learn how to sing, is this very naive?

I don't entirely agree with that. I think learning to sing is a bit like learning how to drive (or learing any other instrument). There are a lot of complicated muscles in there that need controlling, and some people 'get' it very quickly (like those infuriating people who pass their driving test after about 2 lessons), and some take a lot of practice and coaching before they can drive their instrument. Once they're there, they might become every bit as good as a 'natural'; however in practice, people who find it hard to learn usually give up before they get good, so there aren't so many of them around.

That's technique; another part of singing is the instrument itself. This is unique in being built in, and that's the bit you can't do much about. The quality of the voice is a very personal thing, and who's to say whose is better. There are plenty of famous professional singers whose voices I frankly don't like, but I wouldn't say they can't sing. It's just a reflection of my own taste.

Musicality is another part. I don't really know whether that's mostly natural or learnt. I get the impression it's innate, but on the other hand mine has improved with practice so it's certainly not fixed forever.

So, think about singing as learning to master another instrument - you can't expect to get good unless you practice and learn a bit of technique. It'll be worth the effort though - just think, you might have the equivalent of a Stradivari lurking in your throat, just waiting for you to get full control...

A young child may not sing in tune initially - but at some age will be in tune. I don't know the research on this, but there are totally tuneful singers at age 3, and more tuning up at age 6 say.

I have also heard adults tune up over time. I do not know if you could go to a teacher and get there quickly using some special technical approach. It is likely that such a person has become immersed in a musical environment and has made the grade by singing along with the radio, CD, piano, guitar or whatever.

Singing teachers I know normally audition pupils, presumably because of the difficulty of coaching a skill at such a very basic level.

i do agree with your comments, its well in my personal case i never learnt how to sing it was just always there i guess, but this is a very personal thing. Being musical helps lots too. I started voice lessons last year, starting at grd 5, i dont think having singing lessons has improved my voice in the slightest i dont think it has made an impact at all. But its true, you can get better at singing by practicing. I just dont feel the way my voice teacher wants me to sing is the way i want to sing. Anybody can have singing lessons and improve their technique but wether it sounds nice is a totally different thing no?
