Yes I have and I really hate it. After I saw it for a few weeks I felt really self-conscious playing in front of anyone... I pull really funny faces!! I am never going to do it again...although I had to do it this week..... at uni our performance exams are recorder so the external examiners can see them... thankfully we don't get to see them.... hurrah!!

omg yes! i was wearing this low cut top and didnt want 2 bow too low but from the audience it looked as if i hadnt bowed at all! plus i went really red, as i always do in concerts. Is it just me or do you always look worse in a video to yourself than how other people see you?

Once in our school play Grease, it sounded awful, never mind looked awful. And recently on the news playing with our jazz group. Usually we all look really relaxed and are smiling, but coz the cameras were there we were are really selfconscious and staring at our music!

Exactly! I think it looks awful when I see myself playing on video, but other people don't think that, (unless they are just being nice of course!)

i always see my own photos....they are taken mostly during the performance....or services...etc...and i find them utterly disgusting...

Although the concert wasn't filmed (thinking about it it might have been taped :-), I was wearing a really nice top, but forgot about the bowing aspect. I didn't want to bow because the top was made of really loose material, and so would show everything! So I did this jerky movement, a really quick.
Also, I have been nominated for this prestigious award at school, for my "musicianship" (somehow, why would someone nominate me), and the woman came round my class asking for a picture but I wouldn't give them one. So my Dad said I should take one of me playing, and I look awful - my eyes are half closed and where I am taking a breath on one I look like I am about to sneeze!

Just once, years ago.
I thought I had this fabulous, unrestrained enthusiastic bow.
I discovered that what I
actually did was a sort of semicircular shimmy, ending up with my nose close to my knees.
Don't ever watch myself now. More sense.

Ugh, I hate seeing myself. Though seeing myself playing was a zillion times better than seeing/hearing myself teach on the TEFL course.... fortunately the camcorder packed up so I didn't have to watch much of myself *phew*!!
The only good thing about the two recordings I saw of myself was how much better I sounded in the second one - still not great, but the tapes were made almost a year apart, and I saw them within a couple of weeks of each other, and the second one was vastly better, even though not exactly James Galway or Emmanuel Pahud!!

I used to stick my tongue out the side of my mouth when I played piano or in the samba band. People used to take the mick out of me for doing it, including the teacher who leads samba, so I had to really try hard to stop!
Except I think licking your lips before you play is probably better than sticking your tongue out!

i saw the video of my solo and my facial expression when actually blowing through the instrument. it looks hideous! none of my family seemed to notice but i really look like a fish! Also, I do a rocking/swaying movement when I'm playing. It looks as though i'm possessed or summat!

I did some family camcorder recordings with my nephews and during the recording I had gotten on the piano and played the whole of the James Bond theme. Watching the footage later on everyone laughed at the comical expressions on my face as I got into the music. I found it quite funny too as I am a pretty self-deprecating sort of person...do it to yourself before someone else does it to you is my philosophy.
One of my pupils used to play his Exam pieces with his mouth wide open and with an expression similar to that of a surprised trout. Of course, being the consummate professional that I am, I never once burst out laughing or commented on it.......

Yes, when I sang a solo at the school show! Though it was all in tune, it didn't sound like my usual timbre at all, much more thin and kind of airy! It sounded quite awful to me, and I was blinded by the bright lights on stage and kept looking up (I couldn't see the audience) to where I imagined there might be people!! Quite humiliating, I must admit!
sarah-flute
May 25 2005, 11:33 AM
Awww.... don't worry too much about the timbre - it's very very hard to record people really well, plus when you are listening to yourself while you actually sing, you hear it how it echoes and reverberates in your head, so it probably wasn't half as bad as you thought - in fact it was probably great. You can't really hear how you really really sound unless you have been recorded with a really good set up that will catch everything that comes out without any background noise or interference or hum etc etc.

Has anyone ever noticed how tiring it is performing long pieces. I mean, when i used to play pieces, my hand would feel like dropping off at the end, but i would feel ok otherwise. On sunday i played in a big concert n i played Chopin Polonaise which is on the alternative list for grade 8, and i came off stage almost panting!!!

hehe anyone else get very tired during playing?

How long is the Polonaise - heard it several times but never noted the time.
Of Franck's Trois Chorals (Organ) the shortest one comes in between 12 - 15 minutes ... that's No 3 en la mineur(No 3 in A minor)
His Grande Piece Symphonique is approx. 25 minutes

If it's on the grade 8 list I think probably around 5 - 7 minutes.

I sometimes move alot when playing. I dont usually take much notice at the time but it can be kinda embarassing afterwards. Also, one time at a competition there was something on the keys in the bottom octave of the piano and I went to brush it off in the middle of a piece! I was playing up above middle C for most of the piece, and it took about 3 tries to brush it off so it was really obvious. I have no idea what possesed me to do that, should have just left it there. It was really embarrassing...

We tried the Schubert Fantasia again.Total performance time about 20 mins. Didn't get through it,but pupil not stumbling until the Trio. It's the stamina that is lacking.I'm in a different world playing this piece,so stamina doesn't matter with me.
I possess 3 copies of this:
The best is first...
Perahia/Lupu...WOW...and you get Mozart Sonata for 2 pianos in D major. K. 448. This is the only version to listen to.
Joint second is Richter/Britten...the composer...and Campion-Vachon.
No offence to joint second.Don't bother.Once you have heard Perahia/Lupu nothing else compares.
