Thanks to danielr, from my classical music discussion group http://groups-beta.google.com/group/Classi...usic-Discussion on google groups for posing this question.

Imagine you are to be confined in a solitary island for, lets say, a
year. You are allowed to take with you ONLY one CD of each of the
following:
a) A piano concerto.
cool.gif A symphony,
c) A work of chamber music (string and/or winds).
quartet/quintet/trio/duo, and
d) A soloist work.
What would you choose for each category?

Good question. A year on a solitary island sounds a great idea! biggrin.gif

Probably -

Brahms Piano Concerto No 2
Mahler Symphony No 2 'Resurrection' (Simon Rattle and the CBSO, of course!)
Mozart Clarinet Quintet
Beethoven 'Moonlight' Sonata.

Does it HAVE to be a piano concerto? can non pianists swap that for, say, a violin concerto?

No choral music ???

I don't think I'd survive 6 months!!

Poulenc concerto for organ strings and timp
or if it has to be piano, Brahms no 1
Symphony - Dvorak no 7
Schubert string - I think it's a quintet - the one with the sublime slow mvt
Solo - one of the Bach solo 'cello suites.

Maggie
SteveHopwood
Rachmaninov 3rd
Brahms 1st
Schumann piano quintet
Chopin G minor Ballade

Hmmmmm - seems to be a pattern emerging in my choices biggrin.gif

Fine...a concerto...
Mine would be Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 5
Beethoven's 9th
Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano
Liszt's Sonata in B minor
ah yes...and you may post choral music. wink.gif

I'd choose chopin's piano concerto No1,Paganini's 24th Caprice,Kriesler's Liebesleid n Rachmaninoff's preludes. laugh.gif

a. Ravel Piano Concerto in G major
b. Beethoven Symphony No 5
c. Franck Sonata in A for violin and piano
d. Debussy Syrinx for solo flute (but has to be played by Emmanuel Pahud)

The marooned person could end up sad. When the rescuers came he said has someone got a CD player and somewhere to plug it? smile.gif

There is another joke like that about a smoker marooned with a million cigarettes but no matches.
