Hi
I wonder I anyone could help me!!?
I have my first ever piano pupil tonight and it's a bit daunting! OK, shes only 7 but what is the best thing to do on a first lesson that will keep her interested? I'm just dreading her saying something like "That's boring" or her really not understanding!
I know I should look at rhythms and hand position and maybe a few notes depending on how she picks it up but otherwise I'm a bit lost!!

Thanks
Kate

I've taught a few pupils piano at a music centre but only for one day.Know why?Because all of them felt too stressful during the lesson and wanted another teacher to teach them!!That was my first job and I messed it up!Anyway,I've learnt a few lessons that might be useful to you.For her first lesson,it's of vital importance to try communicate with her.You can ask her questions like "Do you love music?".You can perform a some nice children pieces to show her how she will be abe to make good music if she learns to play piano.DONT stress too much on her hand position. It's a no-no!If she feels very happy and looks forward to the next lesson,it's your FIRST success in music teaching.I wish you great success here and happy teaching! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Thanks!!
I did it!! She picked it up really quickly and actually sight read some rhythms without me having to correct her! I was worried she woulden't understand me!

I was happy to her her say "When's my next lesson going to be then?" - It made me feel like I had done something right by making her enthusiastic about it!

Panic over!

Well done Kate. That is brilliant. biggrin.gif

Follow your instincts when teaching this girl. The single most important thing is to give her a happy time. I know you will be kind to her.

Post queries here when you are unsure of what to do next. There are lots of people who will offer help.

Enjoy your teaching

There cannot have been many of us who did not think we did not mess up our first daylessons.

I have been teaching the piano for 30 years. I made mistakes during my early years (actually, I still make mistakes now, I just hope people don't notice 'cos I am supposed to be so good ph34r.gif )

The important thing is to love teaching. You have a lifetime of doing wonderful things for beautiful children ahead of you.

Enjoy it biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
