Good day to you all!!
My friend (a soprano)and I (a mezzo) are wanting to learn some reportoire as a duo, but are a bit stuck on ideas. We were thinking of perhaps offering ourselves for weddings, functions etc to earn a bit of cash while at college.
So far, I can only think of 'the lord bless you and keep you' (Rutter), Laudaumus Te (Vivaldi) and others that need accompaniment.. We would really like to do some acapella stuff (with harmony) so that we don't need to rely on an accompanist..
Can anyone think of any appropriate ideas? I'd be so grateful for any suggestions. Thanks

Here are a few ideas:
Opera: Depending on how high you can sing as a mezzo, Lakme's Flower duet is a winner (top B for sop, G for Mezzo). Also there's Offenbach's Barcarole from Tales of Hoffman (a bit easier on both voices). The Letter Scene from Marriage of Figaro is nice, though a bit short.
Classical: Sound the Trumpet (Purcell), Stabat Mater (Pergolesi).
There are 2 fantastic duets by Chausson: La Nuit and Reveil. Both really challenging for both voices, though worth the effort.
Musicals: I still believe from Miss Saigon (this is a bit low for both voices; when I do it with my friend we put it up a tone).
Finally, check out "Folk songs for two" by Jay Althouse (ISBN 0-88284-973-5). It's got some really interesting arrangements. Songs on it include "Poor Wayfaring Stranger", "Skye Boat Song", "Scarborough Fair" and "Shenandoah". This is for any combination of voices.
Hope this give a bit of inspiration!
Edited: Oops, sorry, didn't notice the "a capella" part of the request. These all need accompaniments, though you could probably work the folk stuff without. Sorry - the reading ability is faster than the comprehension...

i <3 the flower duet very hard though, well when yu are both 14. Panis angelicue duet is bound to be one of the nicest pieces of music ever, also very popular at weddings and funerals.

Not unaccompanied, but 'Who will love me as I am?' (from Side Show) and 'In His Eyes' (from Jekyll and Hyde) are both lovely Soprano/Mezzo duets.

I've just come across a fabulous unaccompanied duet for soprano/alto. It's "The Sheep Shearing" arranged by Vaughan Williams. I found it in a book called "folk songs of the 4 seasons" published by OUP. It's full of arrangements for female voices, though some of them are for 3 or 4 parts, and some are accompanied.
