Oh god - I looked at the singing syllabus to check I've done everything for my grade 5 exam in a couple of weeks, and I noticed the sight singing with accompniment. I've done soght singing - just 5 notes on a page in my practice aural tests, but what is this other sight singing? Someone please help me? Is it too late? sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif Stephanie XXXX

Poor you - I know the feeling. This happened with me last year when I did my Grade 6 - and that was with a teacher, whose response was, 'Oh, I thought that what we'd done was the sight-singing.' I was not happy...

Anyway, have you got any more lessons? I had one after I found out, when I looked at it a bit, but I'd say just go for it. Give it the best shot you can. Sing it with confidence, and I'm sure you'll be fine. happy.gif

Good luck!

I'm sure Katyjay or someone else will tell you exactly what it means but I assume it's sight singing in the same way that instrumentalists get given a piece to look over for a (very) short length of time & then play it (sightreading). The sightsinging in the aural is just singing the 5 notes or whatever as part of the aural test.

Yes, it's just as Andy-piano-flute says - you get about thirty seconds or so to look over it, and then you will be given the tonic and starting note before you begin.

Sight-singing for singers consists of a short piece that will be accompanied by the examiner - both the singer's part and the accompanist's part are printed on the copy.

The examiner will give you the tonic chord, your starting note and a pulse before you get 30 seconds to look at it and will then repeat that information before you start. There are words on the copy as well as notes but I think you can ignore those and sing to "lah" or something similar if you wish.

This is not an easy skill - there are books of examples published. Maybe you could get sight of some if there's time?

Hope it goes OK - remember it's only a small part of the whole exam. Sing well in the prepared stuff, do the aural OK and I'm sure you'll still pass.

Good Luck smile.gif
