How long does everyone practise piano for every day? Even though im doing grade 8 i feel that i dont practise enough because of school and exams and stuff. How long are we MEANT to be practising at this level?

It depends when your grade 8 is .Most of my grade 8 students do at least an hour a day, and more from the entry goes in. Obviously they can't do as much when they are doing school exams so we try to avoid grade 8 in June if possible.

And remember quality is better than quantity. wink.gif

I find that if I manage 2 hours I can just about cover everything...
You know what you need/want to get done so you aim for that rather than clockwatching.

I normally practise between 30 mins - an hour a day depending on how busy I am. It obviously varies with people but if you find that you tend to get bored after a little while and don't play your best as a result then maybe you should make time during the day to have a few practise sessions instead of one long one. This way you are probably going to get more work done than if you practised non stop for a long time as you are more likely to do your best when you first start playing. Hope this helps smile.gif

I agree with that. Several shorter practice sessions tend to be more productive than longer ones. Its also a good idea to start with exercises and scales and then practice everything else in a different order.

Thanks i'll try that, i never know how long i practise for because i never have one long session i just play when i feel like it.

during school time i think my teacher understands i cant do a lot of practice. But in the summer, which is my BIG practice time, she says i should practice at least 3 hours a day now. So i usually do either lots of shortish practices, or 1 long practice and a couple of shorter practices.

Just over ½ an hour a day, although I do spread it out throughout the day.

I do at least 1 hour for grade 8 or as much time as I need to cover all my work. Don't forget that 30 minutes of practise can be better than 5 hours if you practise well.

(it not making any difference but....)

Why do you think you're still Pre-Grade 1 lol! tongue.gif Only joking! I practise for a reasonably long time, but often find I spend more time off-putting my scales so I can play pieces instead! How many scales do you have to practise lol?!... well, first there's all the ascendings and descendings... 12 majors, and 24 minors... then there are the contrary motions...12 majors and 12 minors (you don't get contrary minors I don't think?!), then all the arpeggios...12 majors and 12 minors... and if you want to count the broken chords (I think that's what they're called, can't remember!) an extra 12 majors and 12 minors! Umm... so calculating roughly 108 scales!!!! And if you happen to play that big book of Hanon exercises (if you play piano), you'll get an extra 60 exercises more!! So, the big number is 168 exercises!

And thus you'll find you don't have much time to do anything else for the day! smile.gif

I practise about once or twice a week sometimes, or if I get the time then more than that. Needless to say my progress is rather hesitant. rolleyes.gif Bit strapped for time mostly.

Hi,

I'm doing grade 7 piano in a couple of weeks and I do about an hour a day. I have found that now I am ready for the exam, it doesn't take that long to cover everything. It just takes a short time to keep everything tip-top. All the real learning took place months ago.

I do about 20 mins scales, 20 mins pieces, 15 mins sight-reading and 5 mins aural each day. I also divide the scales into two halves so that all the scales get covered every two days.

I'm looking forward to getting this grade over and done with so I can get on to other repertoire and start advancing again.
