Flaming is a responsive act.. i.e. someone posts and then you flame them (be critical/abusive etc. about their post/them) in return

Yes, trolling is proactive, flaming is reactive. Very often trolling is done in an attempt to try and start some flaming......as in "light the blue touchpaper and retire...."

Best to just ignore trolls, and then they go back under their bridges and sulk.....fol-de-rol

Thought I'd better respond to a few of the questions I've had online rather than by email to individual members.

Trolling, flaming and other such wonderful terms will be covered in the longer version of the forums rules (which will be up by the end of today) But since a lot of you have been asking...

Trolling constitutes one or a series of posts from a user with the deliberate intention of inciting controversy or to cause annoyance or offence to other users. The content of a “troll posting” may consist of:

* A personal attack on other forums users
* An apparently foolish contradiction of common knowledge
* A deliberately offensive insult to readers of a forum or discussion thread
* A broad request for trivial follow-up postings

Best way to cope with a troll is not to respond (that's what they want - attention and a reaction) Contact one of the moderation team and let us deal with it.

Flames – posts that are excessively abusive, attacking, threatening, or aggressive in nature - either provoked or unprovoked. Again, don't allow yourselves to be baited - contact a moderator and we'll extinguish it.

The Warning system is our "gentle nudge" to users who are misbehaving or who have had complaints made about them. You can only see your own warn profile. If you're naughty enough to receive a warning - the warn-o-meter will creep up and you'll be able to see the reason for your warning.

Five warnings and you're banished to the pre-moderation queue for one month. If we keep having to warn you after that you risk having your account permanently suspended.

Check out the rules later and all will be made clear. Hope this answers all your questions.

Thanks Christine, very useful clarification and looking forward to absorbing all the "rules" in due course. I'm sure the forums will be happier places for a few ground rules.

so the next harry potter book. Harry has a horrible summer with his family, feels happy when he goes back to hogwarts with ron and hermione, then something mysterious happens involving voldemort, harry ron and hermione try to solve it, get in trouble, but dumbledore saves them from trouble and acknowledges that harry potter was brave.

sorry to be cynical but its all too obvious having read the 1st four and tranched through number 5.

I believe he is physically capable of criticising Harry Potter. (And probably will continue to do so too) lol.
Personally, I think the books are a bit of harmless entertainment that take you away from the real world for a few precious hours. Can't be bad.

ye i agree its quite good in a harmless way, but i think 7 or 8 books, which they plan to produce is too much. Or at least they could have had a break between book 4 and 5, say. The first 4 books were a great hit, but the others being released too quickly could spoil the series.
