thereThere.gif Oh no, i hate it when that happens. I'm sure she'll forgive you pretty soon when she's calmed down a bit and realised you didn't mean whatever it was seriously.

My day's not been all that great. I spent most of it doing physics coursework that i meant to finish last night (still only half done), then dinner was ready just after i'd finished playing my piano scales, so i'd just got my fingers nice and warmed up, but couldn't get round to the pieces. Since then, the TVs been on, so i can't play the piano. I have this feeling that the time before my exam is running away, I'm not really ready for it, and i can't really do anything about it sad.gif On the up side, this has made more time for recorder, which seems to be going quite well.
Rainbow
Hi everyone!

Holz, don't worry too much about it, I'm sure you can sort it out when she's calmed down.

Just had a choir concert tonight...........why does whoever writes the programmes think that there is a piece called Pachebel's Cannon?!
sarah123
was it a particularly loud cannon? laugh.gif

Actually, you can take paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Yep, in Anadin Extra - which has caffeine in it as well. Best non-prescription pain killer ever, I use it when the pain from my health problems kicks in (unless it's so bad that I need the codrydamol, lol).

Sarah: Thanks for your sympathy! I find sometimes if time is running out, it's possible to move things up a notch and start learning things more quickly. It also focusses the mind! I'm sure you'll do well, and glad the recorder's coming along.

Rainbow: Hi! Thanks for your sympathy too. Isn't Pachelbel's Canon one of the big guns in the repertoire? (bad joke, sorry!) And it's not a proper canon either!

Their interpretation wasn't particularly explosive! tongue.gif

The choir director and I spent so long frowning about it that the music centre manager noticed the spelling mistake and apologised to the audience rolleyes.gif

I'd say it's more an old warhorse happy.gif

What else did you sing?
Rainbow
Elgar's 'My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land' and Orlando di Lasso's 'My Heart is Offered Still To You'.

I feel so sad that I've had to quit orchestra because I'm not really well enough to be able to go very often........I've been going for nearly 8 years, I had only a term and a half left before I had to leave anyway but I just can't hack it anymore. sad.gif

I'm sorry to hear about that, Rainbow.

I don't know about your health problems. Are they likely to improve? I hope so.

Thanks. Well, I still haven't got a diagnosis (after nearly 2 years!) and I've kind of reached the limit of what I can do myself by being sensible, getting enough rest etc. Hopefully things will get better soon! Sorry about the moaning.
Holz Gedeckt
Sounds like you're doing the right things. smile.gif

I have two friends who were in the same condition as you (no diagnosis as to the actual cause). One was very poorly (internal organ failure), the other suffered chronic pain for a number of years. Miraculously, they've both had a fantastic recovery and are A1 again several years later.

Oh, I'm really happy that they've both recovered!

Had better go to bed now.

Hope your friend calms down soon!

Night!

I'm off too. Got to take choir practise at 0830a.m!

Night Rainbow!
Night Sarah, if you're still around!

Panadol has kicked in! smile.gif

Have you tried ibuprofen? It's been shown to offer greater pain relief compared to paracetamol when used for period pain. For best results, take it regularly: 400mg, three times a day, spaced evenly. For even better results, if you can predict your periods with any degree of accuracy, start taking it the day before. Actually, you can take paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Then if that's not enough, you have a few options. The first is rather than taking paracetamol (panadol) take co-codamol (don't take both paracetamol and co-codamol as co-codamol is a mixture of paracetamol and codeine). Or, go and chat to your GP. Mefenamic acid as an alternative to ibuprofen seems effective for gynæcological pain; or the oral contraceptive pill works well too, as well as providing regularity if that's an issue.

Don't think you have to be in absolute agony to go and see your GP. If it's peeing you off or causing you problems with your duties, go - there's no point suffering when there's plenty of help available. And finally, always read the label - especially if you're taking any other medication, to check for interactions.

Is there anything this man doesn't know ohmy.gif laugh.gif ?

Erm.. I doubt it, he is a doctor!

Disclaimer time: I put that PhD bit in my sig because I am not a medical doctor wink.gif.

It's okay, you're not the only one to think I'm a medic - I had the triage nurse at A&E thinking I was one after saying 'interscapular pain, due to a problem with the thoracic spine; suggests compression of the nerves exiting around T4/T5' laugh.gif.
miss_tickle_thea
OK here I go talking about my medical history (apologies!) Regularity has been a problem until recently, but I went to see somebody about that and it's been sorted (either by the stuff I took or I reached the point where it sorted itself - because I'd been moving around and experiencing a lot of changes that could have been a factor as well). Otherwise I get pains on the first two days but am generally ok unless someone annoys me a lot.
anacrusis
yes, there are lots of ways to doctor someone....(referring to YAP's post here)

DD - Doctor of Divinity
MD - you'd think that was then Master of Divinity - maybe it is as well, I don't know, but in medical circles that's Doctor of Medicine
PhD - Doctor of Philosophy, can be in lots of different subjects, from Astronomy to Computer Science, from English to Medicine again (the PhD in medical circles is rated more highly than the MD, by the way)
LLD - Doctor of Law, I think.
I've missed one, I know - remind me someone, please?

Oh, and medical doctors, many of them, don't have doctorates at all, just a bachelor's degree, which, because it's in Medicine (and has taken five years to get) gives the honorary title of Dr.. This is under the UK system, by the way - it's different elsewhere. So my brother-in-law, who has a BM (bachelor of medicine), MD and PhD (he's rather clever), would be Professor Dr Dr Dr if anyone ever decided to string out all his titles laugh.gif .

OK here I go talking about my medical history (apologies!)

It's okay, you didn't do it in a self-aggrandising 'my problems are bigger than yours' manner smile.gif.

QUOTE
Regularity has been a problem until recently, but I went to see somebody about that and it's been sorted (either by the stuff I took or I reached the point where it sorted itself - because I'd been moving around and experiencing a lot of changes that could have been a factor as well).

I'm glad that's been sorted for you, and well done for going to see someone about it smile.gif. Stress is a big factor, as is growing up, but the main thing as you say is that it's sorted.

QUOTE
Otherwise I get pains on the first two days but am generally ok unless someone annoys me a lot.

Well, if the pain's your main problem now, go with the ibuprofen - take it the day before if you can tell you're about to come on then for the first couple or three days. It reduces the pain as well as the flow so it's quite useful stuff. If you went to see your doc about that, it would be the first thing they'd suggest if you hadn't tried it already. Also, rather than panadol + ibuprofen, try co-codamol + ibuprofen if the former combination isn't enough on its own.

Anyhow, well done for talking about - so many people go 'eek' at the first mention of 'the P word', and given it's something which is going to happen every month for the foreseeable, I don't see any reason why one shouldn't talk about it and pass on information which might make it a bit more bearable for you smile.gif.

YAP's just proved though that not all males are like that - and to be honest, there are quite a few women out there who are too squeamish to face the topic properly too. I think that's particularly sad, given how normal the experience is.

DSc - Doctor of Science. Makes a PhD look like a piece of piddle. It requires a long, successful research career resulting in a vast tome of publications that can collated and submitted for consideration.
DLitt - Doctor of Letters. Like a DSc, but for fields other than science.
DMus - Doctor of Music. Like a DSc, but only for music.

Then there are some 'vocational' doctorates. These represent three years of postgraduate training in a subject, but unlike a PhD there's a lesser emphasis on research and more on application, so PhDs are still the gold standard for postgraduate training:

DClinPsy - Doctor of Clinical Psychology
DBA - Doctor of Business Administration
DEd - Doctor of Education
DMus - Doctor of Music. Confusingly enough, on both lists - can also be a vocational doctorate depending on country/institution huh.gif .
EngD - Doctor of Engineering (actually fairly close to a PhD in terms of research content).

Yep, I'm very much equipped with both a Y chromosome and the ability to use the word period without going bright red biggrin.gif.

Seems like ### ed in schools should cover this sort of stuff, rather than just having the Tampax lady in to say 'yep, you're going to bleed every month, have some of these' and that being the end of it. I don't recall any mention of hot water bottles, light exercise or ibuprofen, and these are really things people should know about. Especially men, so that they have any idea what is going on wink.gif.

Edit: ### ed? Obviously the forum software is uneducated biggrin.gif.

I'm trying to collect as many as I can, a bit like the tops of smartie tubes laugh.gif. Realistically, I'll probably stop at two.

Actually, if I got desperate, I could move jobs every few years and get another PhD by collation of papers from wherever I'm working; then I could be Dr Dr Dr Dr YAP by the time I'm 40 biggrin.gif.

Well when we had ours (and it was regularly explained to us once a year!) the boys were sent into another room where they had WDs explained to them while we got shown the video where the girl woke up in the middle of the night and then had to nick her sister's STs- then told we might get a bit of stomach ache or something.

Yay, separate boys and girls for ### education, create a gulf of misunderstanding right from school biggrin.gif rolleyes.gif. My school only did for one lesson, which was good. Boys might one day get a girlfriend or wife, heterosexuality permitting; and if at least they could understand what was going on and to expect some grumpyness and that hugs might be nice, that would help. There's just too much emphasis on the biological, and not enough on how to live with it.

Took me a bit to work out those abbreviations.... Yep, just a bit of stomach ache, they always play it down don't they? I mean, I don't think scaremongering would be the best approach, but it's certainly misrepresented at present, and the less 'normal' people think their experiences are, the less willing they are to talk about them and find out what might help.
anacrusis
Since women still do the laundry, as often as not, it'd help if they'd had the WDs explained to them too, in case they should have sons later in life. Joining the lessons sounds like a good idea - but I'd also put them much earlier in the educational process, before the "yuk" factor has a chance to cause people to clam up. That'd free up the later years for the stuff kids need to know, which schools tackle appallingly badly, namely the emotional side and bit about mutual respect.
miss_tickle_thea
Come to think of it, the girls then had WDs explained to them in the next lesson - I wonder what they boys were being taught at the time?

We picked up stuff about girls by reading the problem pages in the copies of Just Seventeen they left around the form rooms wink.gif. As for the whole WD thing, I think there was a certain amount of agreement amongst the boys that someone must have invented the whole idea at one point when faced with difficult questions regarding laundry to cover up the fact that they'd knocked one out the night before - 'it just happened in my sleep, honest' laugh.gif.

So glad you've helped Thea out YAP. I suggested a visit to the GP on Friday. What does it take to get some women to go. We're not meant to go through torture on a monthly basis, or have to write one day off due to pain. I knwo there a women where this is a no go subject. I'm glad Thea has been brave enough to bring out into the open. Too many people suffer in silence.

As I said on Friday I did. Three exploratory ops and goodness how many lots of treatments and two babies later thing's are not too bad. However it took the Deputy Head of my VIth form College to Pull me from an exam and refuse to send me home until she could guarantee I wasn't going to faint on the journey before I took the problem seriously. Until that point I thought that was normal!

Jo, I think we believe that being in so much pain is normal because you don't really get told how much it really hurts etc. when you do s3x ed at school. I know those who were at my junior school didnt!

It's a tricky situation. First, I'm all for people going to see their GPs about what is bothering them, and think that period pain is a perfectly valid reason. However, due to people not talking about it, there is a lot that can be done without requiring a GP which often isn't known about. So, my first line is to suggest as much of that as I can first:
  • Ibuprofen three times a day, starting the day before if it's predictable. Take it regularly, do not wait for it to hurt - it works best if it can get into ones system the day before and pre-empt the pain.
  • Add paracetamol or co-codamol if needed, don't take both to avoid ODing on paracetamol. The strongest non-prescription co-codamols are 'Solpadeine Max', which are 50% stronger than the normal ones - they cost more, but in that situation I'm sure would be seen as being worth it.
  • A hot water has been shown to be as effective as ibuprofen, so don't forget it. There are microwaveable lightweight hot water bottles which are handy for being out and about - they're not too big so can be tucked in the waistband of a pair of trousers, and can be warmed up in a minute in the microwave. Alternatively, there are heat patches that work for 8 hours or so once the pack has been opened - Deep Heat make one just for the purpose, ask a pharmacist for more information.
Then, if that's insufficient, please do go, there's no point suffering. Plenty of options available: the contraceptive pill was actually invented to regulate periods, not as a contraceptive, so it's a popular choice which gives both regularity and less flow and pain; stronger NSAIDs (e.g. mefenamic acid rather than ibuprofen); stronger co-codamols. And of course, a GP will ask questions to rule out causes of the pain (e.g. PCOS) so it's always wise to go if the 'standard' pain killers, used correctly, don't work.

Oh, and the other option you mentioned is to have a few children - a little drastic, but does seem to help wink.gif.

True, I think a lot of it is just down to not being able to talk about it, even just between friends in any level of detail. All of the lying curled up in bed in absolute agony, being sick, feeling dizzy when walking to the toilet to be sick etc. goes on in private. People are also very good at hiding pain so even those who can just about continue to go about their daily tasks appear to be a lot more 'fine' than they really are; it's rare for someone to admit how much they're struggling with it, it's just not spoken about sad.gif. Of course some people don't struggle with it at all, which is great smile.gif, so it's not something that will affect everyone badly. As someone who suffered in slience for many years, my advice would strongly be to try YAP's suggestions and then go and see your GP if you're still struggling. GP's really can help, massively smile.gif.

Hi Sarah and Berkshire Mum, how are you?

Hello Rainbow!

I've had a lovely weekend, thanks. Son was playing in a piano recital at Woodley Festival last night, so I heard lots of nice music there, and then today he was in a fantastic ISM concert - lots of very talented youngsters. Quite a musical feast!

How's yourself?

That happened to me in english last year, although i didn't realise it was my work at the time (so it the teacher must have thought i was not owning up on purpose, as she'd said she wouldn't name and shame whoever, and that it was their choice whether or not to own up to it) I can't remember exactly what i'd done worng - something to do with a man with one leg i think wacko.gif

Sounds bizarre! What gets me is that I made one tiny mistake and I got completely humiliated, whereas some people didn't even bother to do it at all, and NOTHING happened to them. Priorities.........
