Switzerland was really good, and it was SUNNY

so it was a bit of a nasty shock to get back to England into a downpour

The highlight was definitely walking under the Geneva fountain. I managed to resist the temptation to play the alpenhorn in a restaurant lol (they were letting anyone have a go)
The duck bite was only a bruise, but is gone now. Tbh, i found it more funny than painful

It's our music centre garden party tomorrow (let's hope it's a bit drier by then!) so I have to do a green salad in the morning - hence desperate visit to Tesco!
Glad to hear you haven't acquired too much of a taste for the strange sounding Brumdy, Ben!
How are you getting on with the personal statement and choosing unis, Sarah?

The handel is the A minor

The Van Eyke I'm doing is 'Derde doen daphne...' and as of today 'Prins Robberts Masco'.
Telemann is 2 of the canonic sonatas.

Erm...
I'm going to write my personal statement at the weekend (my tutor demanded for me to show her it on tuesday, so now i really have to get on with it!)
Unis... Cambridge (probably Clare or possibly Pembroke), durham, then maybe Bristol, Warwick and York. I'll start doing some serious looking at unis once the holidays have started.
Bye Ben

Almost exactly the same unis as my son chose! He went for Imperial rather than York, but they are a funny lot - never invited him to look round or anything, just made an offer through UCAS, so he didn't choose them as his insurance.
Clare is lovely

but they are refurbishing some of the rooms, so son has been warned he will have to share at some point this year - unusual for Cambridge these days. The first year accommodation is very good at Clare, or so I've heard. My brother and my niece went to Pembroke, so son thought he'd rather go to a different college- Pembroke is nice though.
sarah123
Jul 11 2008, 10:42 PM
The third year rooms at Clare were REALLY nice... attick rooms with view over Kings College chapel

although I wouldn't be able to have one of those, as getting a piano up the stairs would be intesting

The first year rooms were also pretty good (a lot nicer than the ones at sidney sussex, for example). I dont know what the 2nd year accomadations like, at the colony, as i didnt get a chance to go there.
BerkshireMum
Jul 11 2008, 10:51 PM
Oooh, are you having a piano in your room? We inquired about that, but Clare don't provide them, you have to hire one, so we decided he'll have to make do with the practice rooms and catch up when he's home. He's asked for a room he can play clarinet in though - just hope he isn't next to someone with a trumpet or a tuba!
We only saw the Colony from the outside, but what you could see seemed OK. I so hope the STEP has gone well enough, though I expect he'll enjoy Durham if that's where he ends up. It's so strange not knowing where he'll be in October - my daughter had a Gap year, but she didn't get a Cambridge offer and knew she'd make her Durham one, so we knew for ages that that's where she'd be.
sarah123
Jul 11 2008, 10:58 PM
I'll definitely have a piano of some description in my room. I'll either rent one or buy a digital, depending on how much it costs to rent one. They said that if you said you play the piano, they would give you a ground floor room because rental companies wont take pianos up stairs.
It's a weird thought that you dont know where you'll spend the next 3-4 years of your life until a few weeks before it starts

Make sure you start looking at STEP early. Son started in November, and felt he'd probably done all he could by the time he took the exams. It all depends how you do on the exam days, of course, which is quite a bit of pressure at a time when you're tired from all the A2 exams.
At least it sounds as if your school is used to preparing people for STEP. The last person to do it at my son's school was 6 years ago, and there was only one teacher left who even remembered him doing it! So it's been a learning curve for the Head of Maths as well as my son - no chance of any exam tips but I think you pick up a lot working through the problems and looking at the answers.

Jul 11 2008, 11:21 PM
oh...thats the other thing I'm meant to be doing

I really need to find some interesting books to read too...
BerkshireMum
Jul 11 2008, 11:31 PM
Son enjoyed "The Music of the Primes" by Marcus du Sautoy and "The Millennium Problems" by Keith J Devlin. (I've just asked him!) There are loads of books around and I expect you have a booklist from school. Don't forget to do some relaxing over the summer too, ready for year 13.
I'm off to bed now, but it's been good to catch up with your news.
sarah123
Jul 11 2008, 11:37 PM
Relax...now why would I want to do that?
I think I've heard of 'The music of Primes', cant remember what its about, btu it sounds interesting.
I have a booklist from school, but the of the few books i have read, the ones that are on the list are the uninspiring ones, so I've decided to ignore the list. I'll go to a bookshop some time soon and see what they have.

There have been a lot of trips going from the lower part of school where I go to sixth form, and I think my sisters school have just had activities week, everyone seemed to enjoy it

It's a few days in london with other year 10s and english teachers.
It's mostly going around places and going to movies and a bit of shopping, so it's a tight schedule.
It's very expencive, but it's going to be fun.
What are you going into college for? I hope you can relax soon...

Sounds like fun, we went to London a few years ago, and it was expensive, but a brilliant experience and was definitely worth it

Hope you enjoy yourself when you go

Should have figured! Yes, I got splurged once this time (On monday), while holding my clarinet

Every night the fight got rather close to the band - over the piano, right down the middle of the band, over bits of paper and music.... Twas rather scary given we all had our instruments!

I think we must've been more restrained, we never got near the band pit! Though we did get rather excited with the specially built splurge guns!
Rosemary7391
Jul 12 2008, 06:18 PM
We didn't have a pit, we were just down by the set of stairs off one side of the stage, and one of my friends entered via that set of stairs, hence my getting splurged on the way past, then as he walked up the stairs someone got him in the face, resulting in any poorly aimed ones going in our direction...
