I think its too late to get lessons through college now, they sent emails about it round before the holidays. I have a list of teachers in cambridge though (i got one for my friend a while back), so it shouldnt be too hard to find one.

I guess it depends on how much free time you think you'll have in year 13. If you really want to do Cambridge Maths, STEP has to be your priority. You could tell your prospective teacher that you just want a term's lessons initially to see whether you take to the violin. Are you going to play the piano for AS music?

I'm not entirely sure what i'll play for music. Given it only has to be grade 6, i'm leaning towards recorder because i find it easier to learn pieces quickly, piano takes ages to anything anywhere near perfect.

Do you have recorder lessons? Maybe three instruments could be one too many; I was thinking you could maybe do recorder for fun and concentrate more on piano and violin, but if you want to play recorder for AS you probably need some teacher input.
My son did some clarinet and some piano for both AS and A2. He found he could go back to piano pieces he'd done at grade 6 level, and get them up again fairly quickly. He'd run them past his teacher for some final polishing before he performed them. On the whole, he played more clarinet, because that's his main instrument. I agree that getting up piano pieces from scratch would take longer than recorder (or clarinet).

I have recorder and piano lessons at the moment, so violin really would be a third instrument.
It wouldn't be too hard to relearn some old grade 6/7 pieces, but it would probably mean not playing the harder stuff i actually want to be playing, but would never get up to performance standard within any reasonable amount of time. Whereas recorder, I play lots of pieces anyway, so can just pick whatever and give it a bit of an extra polish.

Hmmm - looks like the only answer to this is a time-turner!

You'd probably end up exhausted though! Have you seen "Groundhog Day"? The hero in that learned to play the piano, so you could learn violin that way.
Sorry - awful sense of humour.
When are you back to college? I start back on Tuesday, but we have two INSET days so no students until Thursday.

I don't think i've seen groundhog day

but a time-turner would be useful

what?!?!... we have to go back on tuesday

Just been looking at your violin thread and picked up that your recorder teacher plays violin - any chance of getting her/him to give you a 15 min violin lesson after your recorder lesson? That wouldn't add much time to your week, but could be very useful.
Groundhog Day is very funny - watch it if you get the chance. Basically the guy gets caught up in a time loop, which means he relives one particular day over and over again - everything happens the same each time, but he is able to respond differently to the events. One of the things he does is to have piano lessons, so by the end of the film he can play very well!
I must relinquish my place at the computer now. Son's been playing "Phantom of the Opera" for a while (on the piano), but is keen to check his e-mails.
Hope the return to college isn't too much of a shock!

I don't think she'd teach me violin - the impression i got is that she really plays it just for fun.

did you get any kung recorders?

hows the new violin seem?
sarah123
Aug 30 2008, 10:58 PM
no kung recorders

I didn't see any shops with them in, or i may have given into temptation and got a descant...i really should get one some time soon.

hmm...hows the peapod wine doing?
The violin seems to be good. It has a really nice round/loud sound (despite my best -or should i say worst- efforts at playing it) My recorder teacher said it would be really good for fiddle music. I've almost (ish) settled on a bow, and have spent today reteaching myself what i learnt when i was 6, then mucking around with easy music off the net

not done yet. the sweet orange is up.
so you geting on well with it? hope your still practising the recorder
sarah123
Aug 30 2008, 11:07 PM
ooo, sweet orange sounds nice

i be practicing my recorder now

(I WILL get the Van Eyck sorted tonight!!! Its driving me mad lol)
I'm sort of getting on well with violin, in that i feel i am, but am probably doing everything wrong, so dont really want to get anything ingrained. I'll give it a couple of weeks to see how things go once i'm back at college, then decide whether it's sensible to get lessons.

I should be playing some stuff of the G8 list as I'm doing it at like winter. But I get boared and play flight of the bumblebee and jazz
how about you??
sarah123
Aug 30 2008, 11:37 PM
i'm sort-of learning flight of the bumblebee too (on piano). I'm meant to be learning that Beethoven still , but have been mucking around with allsorts instead (currently sort-of learning some Bortkevitch preludes, which were a nice discovery for about £2 in a sale).
On recorder I'm playing loads, but mainly the grade 7 pieces (Van Eyck, Chedeville Sonata, 'Song from Norway' by someone i can't remember the name of

)

Aug 30 2008, 11:45 PM
sweet!
so whats your plans for next week??
sarah123
Aug 30 2008, 11:50 PM
I'm back to college as of Tuesday, so I guess my plans are 'jolly hard work'

mixed with some proper piano and recorder practice (havent really done any proper practice in the last few weeks - just been sight reading random stuff mainly), try a bit more violin and choose a bow probably, maybe get its new case. Other than that, the usual really.
do you have any plans?

I'm going to cornwall and then to scotland

very busy...I'm always very busy because whenever i don't have school work to do, i do music... i'd rather be busy doing something i enjoy than be not busy and doing nothing though

oo, lucky you!! cornwall and scotland is an odd combination...bit far away from each other, don't you think?

Its not so much the tourists that get on my nerves, its the language college students and punt people who are the annoying ones IMO. I feel I need a T-shirt that says 'I live in Cambridge, so no i don't want to go punting, and if i did, i can do it myself!'
