Ser
otonin - A chemical in the brain. (also known as 5-HT {cant remember what the full length name is, someone clever will fill you in, I'm sure}). It's a neurotransmitter (takes the impulse across the synaptic gap in the brain).

Hello, Walking Dictionary is back!
Serotonin
An organic compound, C10H12N2O, formed from tryptophan and found in animal and human tissue, especially the brain, blood serum, and gastric mucous membranes, and active as a neurotransmitter and in vasoconstriction, stimulation of the smooth muscles, and regulation of cyclic body processes.

Yeah, and basically it's a "happy hormone". Anti depressant drugs (e.g. seroxat) contain serotonin.

Do they? I thought they worked by slowing the rate of breakdown of serotonin, so increasing the amount available at the synaptic gap?

Depends what kind of anti-depressant you take. Monooxyuptakeinhibitors MOAI? (lol, I don't really know how you spell that, and it may not be right) or tricyclic ones or others, they have different functions for different problems, and work in different ways.
I don't think they slow the breakdown so much as stop it being used up, so instead of the chemical message for "don't be depressed!" hitting the synapse once and then stopping, it will hit several times, if that makes any sense?
Which ones do which I'm not sure, they don't say much on packets etc, wikipedia might be more useful.... *goes to look*

from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-depressa...elieved_to_workThe therapeutic effects of antidepressants are believed to be related to an effect on neurotransmitters, particularly by inhibiting the monoamine transporter proteins of serotonin and norepinephrine. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) specifically prevent the reuptake of serotonin (thereby increasing the level of serotonin in synapses of the brain), whereas earlier monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) blocked the destruction of neurotransmitters by enzymes which normally break them down. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) prevent the reuptake of various neurotransmitters, including serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

Blerugh, it is taking me ages to write this History essay. This half term, the minimum I should have done by Monday is to have done this essay, an English essay and a General Studies essay. Blergh. Key Skills can wait until Thursday. Hopefully I should get it done.
Off to the doctors soon, to find out why my throat glands have swollen but why I feel perfectly normal!

For tomorrow, I have to do an essay plan, revise for a psychology timed essay and finish composition (which i will have to do in music tech tomorrow).
And even though I spent ages learning subjunctive verbs, in the test today I still only managed 30/50
